New Guy With Tele Questions

Hi everyone! I've been hanging around here for awhile checking out the posts and just wanted to introduce myself. There are some great, knowledgeable people here and I've had loads of fun reading the experiments of guys like Lew and Curly.
The question I had was identifying Custom Shop pickups. I got a Tele lead pickup in trade from a real nice guy and was wondering how I can trace it or prove its origin. It's just got me excited because I've heard Seymour and MJ wind great Tele pickups (this will be my first Duncan Tele pickup). I'm dying to get this thing together to hear it!

Thanks for the welcome! Unfortunately I didn't get any paperwork with the pickup. I still deal with the seller who is going to try to get me some documentation. It is all crusty like an Antiquity. I'll see what he says.

Re: New Guy With Tele Questions

yeah, it does look like an Antiquity

I'd say the "S" on the bottom plate is likely Seymour's initial

do you have a meter? if so, check the resistance and compare that to Antiquities, which are ~ 6.4K bridge

here's a couple pics of my Antiquities for comparison:

It does look like an Antiquity...but if should be signed by Seymour. Never seen an Antiquity that wasn't signed and all of my new Antiquity Tele pickups also have a white label with an 8 digit number. Also the bare wire soldered to the baseplate is not soldered in the usual place. Maybe it's a real old Duncan Custom Shop Model or maybe it's not from the Duncan Custom Shop but instead from another Custom Shop of another manufacturer? Contact MJ in the Custom Shop. Seymour keeps a record of every custom pickup he has wound. They can verify it's authenticity for you if it's real. Lew

Re: New Guy With Tele Questions

I measured on my cheap meter with a dying battery and get 6.8k. The bottomplate reads 7.01, so it's not too far off. I can't seem to find any other identifying marks or numbers other than what's written on the bottom. Still,
if it was an Antiquity, that's not too bad. Actually, I'd be pretty darn happy.
I was told it was wound by MJ as a Broadcaster style replica. I just can't wait to hear it. Unfortunately, the Tele it will be going in is a little way from being complete. BTW, thanks guys.
