New Hamer!!! great guitar

My cousins daughter (would be more like a niece) is in high school, and has recently showed interest in learning to play guitar. She plays classical violin and other intruments in band, so I believe she has an honest interest. When asking her what type of music (guitar related) she likes. One of the first guitarists she mentioned was Santana. I always like to ask this question to aspiring guitarists to see what type of sound they may lean towards. I also feel humbuckers can be less frustrating to the novice guitarist, when remembering my own battles with 60cycle hummmmmmmmm as a beginner.
Well I found her a nice little Hamer. A sunburst flattop. This guitar really exceeded my expectations of a guitar in this pricerange. I paid 225 for this guitar. Without a doubt, or hesitation i would say this guitar plays and sounds as well as any of my mid to upper-mid range guitars. I guess I would say this guitar plays, and has the quality of many 800-1500 guitars. It comes stock with semour duncun designed pups. With very little work the action was flawless. I was worried about the neck being a little wide for her, but after some playing I think it will be alright. It is a wide neck but thinner in depth than my LPs.
For an amp I found the little Vox Valvetronix AC15. I'm not sure why, but the sales rep nocked a lot off of the amp and I bought it for under 170. They are nice little amps. I am a tube amp junkie, so I never really get too excited about solid state amps, but this amp sounds pretty good. Better than I had at her age. It had onboard effects, and a variety of amps it moddels.

For under 500 bones this is a helluva starter package. I think she can grow with the guitar, and it with her.

I highly reccomend the Korean Hamers. I think they will be a guitar that in 10-20 years we look back upon like we do the japanese fenders. I may have to go out and buy one of the carvedtop versions of this guitar, or maybe the american made version

My friend has a bunch of 80's-90's era USA Hamer's he got off EBay. Not sure on the years but they're all shredder models, Centaura, Diablo(2), Californian, and he had another Centaura but he parted it to fix up something else he had. They're all amazing guitars and he got each one of them for 300 or less, amazing that the PRS/Gibson style's from those era's go for 1000+ but the shredder models that used to sell list for 1200, aren't even going for half that price.

Those Koreans slap wood together pretty well, don't they? :) My schecter (also made in Korea) is AWSOME. Great bang for the buck.

Re: New Hamer!!! great guitar

I think the question for her will be if the neck fits her hands, although I suspect she can adapt.

And those Koreans can definitely build a great guitar.

:beerchug: to that, bro. My Chafin is incredible. If you didn't KNOW it was Korean, you wouldn't think it was.

Nice Hamer. I've never played a Hamer, but I really want to. Heard nothing but positive things.

I've been looking at the new SATF and SATQ models. Although they're now made in China, they seem like decent guitars.

I love the fact a person can find good quality guitars nowadays for the price of a pedal. It's actually hard to believe the company can build one and make ANY money off the wholesale price.

There's a few cheap guitars that are great 'bang for buck' guitars.....my favorites are 90's DeArmonds, OLP's, and G&L Tributes.

Re: New Hamer!!! great guitar

I woulda died to have that when I 1st started.

My starter kit was $100... heh

I still wouldn't mind having one of those hamers either.

I've not played the import Studios, but the budget Vectors and Standards are alot of bang for the buck..if the dang things were not alder bodied, I'd have a import Standard by now.

And based on my experience lately...imports are some dang fine guitars for the $. Japanese guitars especially.

I would have loved to have had those kind of deals around when I started playing. You are a GREAT uncle to put this together!
