My cousins daughter (would be more like a niece) is in high school, and has recently showed interest in learning to play guitar. She plays classical violin and other intruments in band, so I believe she has an honest interest. When asking her what type of music (guitar related) she likes. One of the first guitarists she mentioned was Santana. I always like to ask this question to aspiring guitarists to see what type of sound they may lean towards. I also feel humbuckers can be less frustrating to the novice guitarist, when remembering my own battles with 60cycle hummmmmmmmm as a beginner.
Well I found her a nice little Hamer. A sunburst flattop. This guitar really exceeded my expectations of a guitar in this pricerange. I paid 225 for this guitar. Without a doubt, or hesitation i would say this guitar plays and sounds as well as any of my mid to upper-mid range guitars. I guess I would say this guitar plays, and has the quality of many 800-1500 guitars. It comes stock with semour duncun designed pups. With very little work the action was flawless. I was worried about the neck being a little wide for her, but after some playing I think it will be alright. It is a wide neck but thinner in depth than my LPs.
For an amp I found the little Vox Valvetronix AC15. I'm not sure why, but the sales rep nocked a lot off of the amp and I bought it for under 170. They are nice little amps. I am a tube amp junkie, so I never really get too excited about solid state amps, but this amp sounds pretty good. Better than I had at her age. It had onboard effects, and a variety of amps it moddels.
here is the pic
For under 500 bones this is a helluva starter package. I think she can grow with the guitar, and it with her.
I highly reccomend the Korean Hamers. I think they will be a guitar that in 10-20 years we look back upon like we do the japanese fenders. I may have to go out and buy one of the carvedtop versions of this guitar, or maybe the american made version
