Hey gang, so this is Bender.

He's a my custom baritone tele that I built from parts I bought online. He has a scale of 28.6 inches thanks to the solid maple neck with 2 added frets at the low end as made by D.C. Kunkle. You can find him on ebay. I tune this beast to low F# standard.

When I designed this guitar, I didn't want it to be a sterile sounding gent machine. I like to play weird, jazzy stuff on it and crowbar it into a more bluesy context as well, so I put a 59/hybrid in the bridge thinking it would give me versatility and not pronounce the lows too much. Plus I watched the low tuning pickup shootout video and that was my fav. tone at B.

Well, turns out that wasn't the best choice for my telemonster. The volume is seriously lacking and the tone is quite nasal sounding (I probably shouldn't have gone with a thinline body, right?). So anyway, I'm looking for a new humbucker with tight lows, scooped low mids and maybe a bit of a spike in the high mids area (like 3 - 5k range). Something with some character, not too brittle or bland sounding. In around 15 DCR.

Any thoughts?

Two pickups come to mind- possibly a JB, which has the upper mid spike and is in your output area, and a Custom 5 that has a mid scoop. Both should tame the middy sound you are experiencing.

Thanks Mincer, I like the sound of the custom 5. I have a JB in an LP which I love to bits, but I think it might make this thing a bit muddy. I've created a short list from duncans website of custom 5, Pegasus, alternative 8, duncan distortion and nazgul. Gonna have to keep whittling it down. I've got a distortion floating around, maybe I should drop that in and see where I go from there?

If you have a Distortion, then yeah- go ahead and try it. If it is too shrill or too high output, go down from there. The Custom 5 can become the Custom and CC with a magnet swap.
