New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

I've been thinking of selling my Marshall 1960AX cab (loaded with greenbacks) and getting two Avatar closed-back 2x12 cabs, one with greenies and one with G12H30s. This setup would offer the following advantages:

1. Would be easier to transport than a 4x12... if i only need one cab for what I'm doing then i only have to transport one.

2. Would offer a choice or mix of tones from the different speakers.

3. I could set up the two cabs on different locations on the stage/play area for better dispersion, or use one as a monitor. My teacher does this with 1x12s and get great results.

Comments?

Re: New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

A pair of 2x12s is not necessarily sonically equivalent to a 4x12.

Of course, I'm pretty fond of 2x12s so it's no big deal to me. :)

Re: New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

I'm not really looking for an equivalent... two 2x12's wont have the same resonance propeties as a full 4x12. To be honest sometimes the 4x12 is just a little too much for a small venue. Sounds badass, but too much sometimes.

Re: New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

I've had similar ideas. I think tonally the best idea would be to run to Guitar Center and try it out.

Re: New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

im gonna to this same thing sort of.

4x12 = too big for small venues
2x12 = just right.

(2) 2x12's = bitchin for large gigs
(1) 2x12 = badass for smaller gigs.

I'm thinking a v30 and G12H30 in one, and a v30 and an ev black shadow custom90 in the other.

Alrriiiight I've got some planning to do then!

How's the build quality on avatars? Good? I've never heard a bad thing about them.

LOL I used to work at one trust me I have a pretty good idea of what it'll sound like.

One more question... i know how to set this up for proper ohmage but...

1. I'm planning on getting a Weber MASS in the near future... 2 8ohm cabs make a 4ohm load and I'd rather not get 2 attenuators so is there some type of splitter box i can use to split one amp output into two different cabs?

2. With a 100w cab and a 50w amp I get very little speaker distortion when I'm cranked. up. With one 50w 2x12 and one 60w 2x12 am I likely to get more speaker distortion at lower levels?

AHEM... anyone?

Ahem....Get the MASS with the ohm switch ;)

Or get the Dr. Z Impedance Corrector.

First off, the difference between a 4x12 and 2x12 is the 2x12 is half the size. Theoretically, the 4x12, with the same amount of power going to it as the 2x12, would be 3db louder (in other words, barely noticable).

To answer your second question... running a 2x12 with 2 greenbacks @ 25 watts each off a 50 watt amp should give you some mild breakup and slightly higher volumes (more than you would find with a 4x12 loaded with Greenbacks). Running a 2x12 with greenbacks and a 2x12 with the v30s at the same time would give you no more breakup than you're experiencing with the 4x12. I'm running a DSL50 into a 2x12 with a pair of greenbacks right now, and I've found that the volume needs to get to the 5-6 range on the head before the speakers start to sparkle.

Re: New idea for cab setup... your opinion?

wouldn't it be more practical to have 1 of each speaker in each cab?

that way the 2 sides of the room aren't hearing 2 different tones?

I'm looking at the MASS page right now... so it looks like if i add the 2nd output jack option and the selector switch option I'll be able to take the 4 ohm speaker output of my amp, run that into the MASS, set it to 4 ohms, and then feed the two cabs with the MASS outputs, correct?

Well with the 2 Avatars i can always mix and match the speakers if i see fit. Like take one out of each and swap 'em, yannow? And since the ohmage will be the same across all 4 speakers it should be no problem!

Excellent answer, thank you.
