Re: New iso cab in the house
Okay, an update on the iso cab-ness:
The leakage from the iso cab was definitely signficant. Even though it was attenuated, I would still say that over 50% of the sound was leaking out, as well as the low frequencies causing a bit of rumble.
The first thing I did was get an Auralex Gramma,
http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_gramma/sound_isolation_gramma.asp
This platform is
amazing. Not only did it kill the bass rumble dead, but it also cleaned up the sound of the cabinet, too. For a paltry $50, this was one of the best investments I have ever made in my guitar rig.
The second thing I did was purchase a 4 pack of soundproofing blankets from Audimute,
http://www.audimutesoundproofing.co...that-absorb-sound-soundproofing-blankets.aspx
Once again, for only $100 for four blankets, this proves to be an incredible value for the money!
With only two blankets wrapped around the iso cab, I would say I cut another 60-70% of the audio leaking from the iso cab. You really need to wrap up the iso cab
tight, however, or they will not do enough.
Result:
With the iso cab open, I measured The Splawn playing with the treble boost on and the Hot Plate set at -8dB. It weighed in at about 109dB from 1m away. (C weighted, slow)
With the iso cab closed, the Splawn measured at about 80dB (Hot Plate still at -8dB). Still much too loud for normal usage when other people are about in the house or the baby is napping.
With two Audimute blankets, you can really start to feel the difference. The sound of the iso cab went down to about 45-50dB, low enough for someone to watch TV in the same room as the iso cab and not have it disturb them. With the Hot Plate set to -12dB, it dropped below normal TV levels; perfect for practice!
With the iso cab in the adjacent room, on the Gramma and the Hot Plate at -8dB, with two Audimute blankets --
you can't hear a bloody thing!
It is now NYC apartment/family/domestic tranquility approved!!
