New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

There was a comment awhile, back wher some dude said that the new issue digitech whammy sucked. Is that true? Its about 199.00 new, and of course the vintage is way up there at about 600.00 used, so that entirely rules out the vintage pedal for me. Whats the deal on the Reissue Digitech Whammy?Any good alternatives besides the Boss OC-2?

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I had the new Whammy (WH-4) and the XP100 Whammy/Wah, and liked both of them a lot.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

NONE of thre Whammy pedals after the original WH-1 is as good as the original IMO...the newest reissue is alright but it still isn;t "right".

Now, you mentioned the OC2...are you wanting a whammy pedal or do you just want the sub octave effect???

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I own the reissue ,and i can say it's not as good as the whammy 1..Since whammy 1 had some kind of patentedor better said ,licensed Technology inside ,wich other Whammys don't have...That makes it better...
The whammy reissue ,or whammy 3 or 2 (alltough 2 should be great) ,are not worth the money...Ofcourse it's fun to do the tricks for just 200 ,but itm sounds like crap mostly...That means ,the tracking is only precision on single notes ,and the higher pitching is somehow not allways "musical"...That#s why i wanrt an 8 stringed guitar...Whammy gave me the isnpiration to play higher ,but also gacve me the experiences to do it with more natural ways!

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I think the original's tracking chip was far superior to any of the reissues. This is internet here-say though, I've never had the opportunity to try a WH-1.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

Just to be clear about my opininos on the whammy pedals...I own an original WH-1 and have owned both an XP100 and the newest reissue and neither of them could kep up wiht the WH-1...

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I've heard plenty of recordings of the WH-1, and from those, it sounds exactly like the WH-4. Tom Morello & Dimebag Darrell were both using the originals back in the day, and from them, I heard no difference.

The XP-100 was not nearly as good as the new one, but the actual usable stuff (octave up/down, all the wahs) is pretty cool.

Bottom line, go listen to some old Rage Against the Machine or Pantera, and check out how the Whammys sound. Then, go plug in the new one and see what you think.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

Some of the tracking errors on the WH-4 can turn out pretty cool with some chorus and delay. I like it, but my main use is harmonised leads and big octave bends. I use the dual octave thing with a violin bow for some wicked singing soundscapes too.

I don't really have any issues with the WH-4, other than the treadle needs lubing up quite often, I find it gets really stiff. But I've never tried the WH-1, maybe that would be better.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

It's not really an issue of better or worse...if you have and like an WH-4 then roll with it...for me it didn't cut it. The prices of WH-1's have come down in recent years but a few years ago they were getting close to a grand a pop and I got a WH-4 in hopes that it would be close enough and I could sell my WH-1 for a fat profit...no dice, even thought I rarely use the Whammy pedal if I want to use it I want the sound that comes out of the WH-1 not the 4 or any other whammys...

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I guess my take on Whammys is this: How much exactly are you willing to pay for a pedal that goes "wooooooweeeeeeee" a bunch of different ways?

Some guys are willing to pay $300 for a clean boost that does next to nothing, so I guess $600 for a pedal that goes woooooweeeee isn't that ridiculous.

Ha! So true. I try to make mine to more than wooooooweeeeee, but it is usually a variation on that theme. Like, wooooweeewooowe wowewoweo... or something.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

^ exactly, and thats why I couldn't justify keeping mine.

I really want to get the code from the original though...

JOE!!! You sold yours?!

I didn't know that...truth is the prices have come down to what will more than likely be the lowest you'll ever see them on originals.

I have to be hoenst, I would never pay $600+ dollars for one but when I got mine you couldn't give them away so I got a great price...I wish it wasn't as beat up but It was only pedal board for years and this was before the days of covered pedal boards so it doesn't look great but it sure sounds right!

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I hear ya brother...I never gig mine anymore but I just can't make myself let it go...it's a noise box for sure but I keep thinking one day I'll need it for something...

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I like the WH 4 - i think it nails the RATM/Audioslave sounds perfectly.

Haven't tried to orignal Whammy tho...

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

The stock wh-4 comes with little rubber feet under the expression pedal that stop it from going all the way down (original note/signal). Once I removed those little feet, the pedal was perfect.

Once again though, never played an original, and at the price they're rising to, I won't unless its given to me as a gift..

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

Reissue is a good pedal for the money unless you really love the whammy effect so much that you want to spend $600+ for the orignal.

Its just like asking yourself do you think an Epiphone LP is "good enough" for your needs or do you want to drop a few grand on a real Gibson R8 ?

I've owned the Original (should of kept it doh!) and also the reissue and didn't keep either, why ? Because the effect isn't even worth $200 to me.

Personally if I hear Tom Morello do one more bleep bloop squeal solo with the think I think I'd shoot myself. I can't stand that usage of the pedal!

I do think its a fairly cool pedal for some of the other more subtle stuff it does though, but I sure wouldn't spend $600 for it.

Re: New issue Difitech Whammy vs. Vintage ?

I love the Whammy Pedal when Satch used if for "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" - my favorite track of the "Crystal Planet" album. :)
