New Laney, Now What?

alright, so i bought a tt50 combo. please hold the "oohs," "ahs," and "i told you sos" because it's too late. i bought it and i'm sticking with it. i'm convinced that laney makes a top notch product and that i got a great deal. i will acheive good tone. my el diablo is another story and i'll solicit some advice for that later because i know i'm going to stick with that one.

so first off, what can you guys tell me about tweaking laney amps? what kind of eq settings, overdrives, etc.. do laney amps favor? any good advice for getting great tone from laney amps?

also, what kind of overdrive or distortion pedal should i get for my tt50, or should i get overdrive or distortion?

i'd appreciate some help, thanks.

Re: New Laney, Now What?

EQ settings a very personal, I've never heard of somedy's EQs making somebody else find what they were looking for, allthough me and Richie Blackmore agree that Presense is useless, i.e. 0. You should have enough gain for most of metal with out overdive unless you want a certain vibe, once again check out LaneyForum.com LaneyPosse.com there are more people with TT there than here. Laneys are much better through non HH speakers, sorry tis true.

Re: New Laney, Now What?

I've never played TT but I am willing to bet that G12T-75s would sound horrible in it, so I would not recommend what to use, but I would say if you want sucky, brittle highs that hit your audience like sharon ston's ice pick in basic instinct, and your grandma's fart-like definition of lows get G12T-75s, how do I know ? I just played my AOR through them for 3 hours today.

First, replace those tubes!! Get some JJ's that are biased for Maximum Headroom. Then, Get a cab with Celestion Vintage 30's. My Old Guitar Tech had the same set up. Very Very versitile!

+1,
If you dont mind spending, get an assortment of Gold Pins, High Gain Gold pin, and just plain high gains, you would have the crunch and the cleans that very, very, recording worthy.

Re: New Laney, Now What?

I dont think the high gain tubes are worth it. You are better off getting a decent OD pedal. If you want to preserve the EQ of the amp, get the ZW pedal. Does a really good job of just punching the amp and opening it up a bit on the highs.

I disagree on the HH speakers.. I think you should try what you can. Some people like them, some hate them. If I am not mistaken, the TT cabs come with V30s now. I have also heard it only reinforces the odd mid spike in those amps. I say go with Eminence equivalents, since they just sound better and more round to my ears than Celestions. Agreed, stay away from the T75. They sounded so gold with the VC50 in the combo when playing clean; although a little brittle for the ears. I say go with the Governor. Let us know how the amp sounds, they dont get reviewed often.

Re: New Laney, Now What?

Yeah, if you want your sound to bounce between october fest, schnitzel, sour crout, bruger beer fart and male cat who just had somebody step on his nuts get G12T-75s they are a wonderfull british product.

Re: New Laney, Now What?

get some emi tonkers, iirc they are supposed to be a fane copy.....laneys and fanes go together like butter and jam.....:10:

Re: New Laney, Now What?

NewKing,
Is that a fact???????!!!!!!!!!! Tonkers are Fane repros? thanks for making my life more complicated and yet more fun!!!

Re: New Laney, Now What?

The real Fanes today are one of the most expensive speakers there are, at least here in the U.S. I wanna get way from celestions, as my research keeps leading me to V30s and i will not pay that kind of money for speaker which is made in China. Emi's are on the other hand are Made in U.S.A, and for some reason I think its better match for an amp that is Made in England over 20 years ago. I just recently had the thread about Fanes as Laney/Fanes seems to be part of the Iommi's perfection of a tone in the seventies. Hmmm ... an X pattern of Swamp Things with Tonkers or a one of each for BB's combo ???

yea reeves amps makes a purple fane, a copy of the fane speaker....but he only sells them loaded in his cabs....

Re: New Laney, Now What?

I own the Governor and it's pretty close to V30s...But i wouldn't get them..The Wizard is the Answer to your questions BarbarionBroBrute...It's more open ,tighter bottom and better Overall better tonal range...

Re: New Laney, Now What?

the wizard? huh, i'm going to look that up. someone else suggested the swamp thing too... i'm a newb, so i think it's going to be a little tough getting the right speakers. they're not as easy to sell as a new amp if i don't like them.
