New Marshall DSL 1923 Tribute Amps

I wouldn't mind having a DSL or one of the new ones. DSLs sometimes get a bad rap and I don't know why. I think it's possible that the TSL series kind of ruined it for the DSL. Marshall TSLs are notorious for reliability issues and noise. I never met a DSL that went bad. Compared to the TSLs I played or briefly owned it's a stark contrast! I'm glad Marshall did this. I hope they continue the DSL line and improve it.

I have a JVM which I like very much, and it pretty much blows DSLs out of the water in the versatility department but DSLs compete equally in terms of tone and warmth.

DSLs are decent, and definitely more reliable and better sounding than TSLs.

...and alternate faceplates and hand signed certificates are worth their weight in gold to the working guitarist. I should now: I still have the inspection tag tied to the handle of my Mesa. I've played probably a couple of hundred gigs with that amp, and let me tell you IT IS USELESS without that tag. Unuseable.

So yeah, it all adds up to a winner for me. Screw my longstanding lust for a 65. Those losers just scrawl on the inside of the chassis. It's that new DSL for me...

I haven't tried any of the combos, but the DSL stacks are great, IMO. You won't be disapointed.................



Cool that it's a limited edition too. I paid about $300 more from a dealer for mine than the regular production DSL Halfstacks from MF. It was definatelly worth the extra just for the custom color. Plus, I don't worry too much about it loosing any value.

A friend of mine tells me his Marshall rep said there are a few component upgrades in the amp. Might be worth the extra $$

I heard the same thing about mine, but that was from a salesman, so I don't know if it's true or not. I do know that Silver Tolex accounts for a 10% increase in gain............. :friday:

That's a very cool DSL you've got there! Given my experience, I'd probably prefer to have that amp over a real Jubilee.

I'm suspicious about these component upgrades, especially when they don't mention anything about it in the marketing spiel. Sounds like a sales dude bluffing and hoping no-one presses for further information to me. And when you're dealing with what is essentially a reissue, any component 'upgrades' could be seen as an admission that the originals were inferior in some way, which is something Marshall surely wish to avoid while there are still DSLs on shop floors around the world.

Reminds me of the fender custom shop bassbreaker: a straight-up pcb bassman reissue rehoused into a laquered tweed cabinet with two vintage30s, and not a single upgrade or piece of hand-work under the hood. Mind you, at least fender went to the trouble to rehouse the chassis. This DSL doesn't even get a speaker or cab upgrade...

That said, I think it's time for lucid to trade up. Take it from me, you haven't heard tone until you've tried a production-line rerun with a hand-signed certificate. And the tone actually improves if you frame it...

exactly, a new speaker makes the DSL401 a totally different amp.. they cut costs in one of the vital areas

Yeah this is a collectors amp- Why else would you buy it when near new DSLs can be had for $600 or so. I mean for crying out loud, they've only been discontinued a year? two maybe?

DSL like any marshall really just needs the right speakers- Greenbacks and G12H work wonders and I think 75s sound better than V30s ( no doubt I'm not a fan of V30s in the first place, but especially not with DSLs)

This is a fairly shallow attempt to clear out the remaining DSL's in the factory.

The shop I work at has about 5 DSL's. Nobody wants them

Gary is one of those guys who could play through a Gorilla and a stock Boss DS-1 and just kill ya with his tone.
