Re: New Mix on Hallelujah...

Sweet.... very nice. It's a very topical track over here right now as it was the song recorded by the winner of a national talent show.

Halle-LEW-ya... it really is an emotional vocal... excellent.

Just a couple of mikes recording in stereo, both on one mike stand, and both aimed at the neck joint of the guitar. Brad has a bunch of mikes and I can't remember what we settled on. He did use a tube preamp for the two guitar mikes.

Nothing really special - my guitars just seem to record really well. My favorite recording guitar is a small bodied '95 Taylor 512 Englemann Spruce/Honduras Mahogany guitar. Not a real expensive or fancy guitar but it records beautifully. I'm a big fan of Englemann Spruce and usually prefer it over Sitka.

I do always replace the plastic bridge pins with fossilized walrus or mammoth ivory. I think it improves the tone and sustain. I don't always replace the bridge saddle or nut unless there's a problem. All of my Taylors still have the original Tusq saddles and nuts.

The backing vocals are tight ..... you can always tell when one person's doing all the parts. Are you planning to leave the vocals fairly dry in the final mix?

It's a sweet arrangement and the acoustic sounds great.

Re: New Mix on Hallelujah...

I think the guitar is too dominate in the track, it should be the guitar backing the vocalist. If you turn the volume way down on your monitors you can hear the guitar competes too much with the vocal. Have you compressed her vocals well? I would raise them up still and make sure they're well compressed. Otherwise good job as I said before.

Thanks! We actually did bring up Sandra's vocals. The mix sounds fine to me in my car, on my computer, at home and through the speakers of the sound system at work. But hey - it's my album - and I'm the guitar player! :cool2: LOL!

Re: New Mix on Hallelujah...

I think it mixes well, cause even though the guitar is a bit loud, it takes the full deep low-mid-ish tone, and Sandra's vocal is in the mid and high mid range, so they don't step on each other and she still cuts through.

On my speakers, anyway. :)
