New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

It's simple, I am looking at having a new neck built for my 71 SG that has a custom paintjob. The neck on it now is way too narrow for my gorilla hands. Who besides Ed Roman can help me out?

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

i'm guessing the whole guitar needs a refinnish anyways? basicly that type of work is almost as expensive as having a whole new guitar made... they have to cut and steam out the old neck from it's glue joint... make a new neck and install it on your guitar's body... then do a whole refinish to make it all match....

i had my 76 Les Pauls neck completely rebuilt as it kept warping... they steamed the fingerboard off and then the whole neck off, they reused my LP's neck and used a new fingerboard... reglued everything back together and did a neck refinnish to blend it in with the old finnish... my guitar was gone almost 10 months... he only charged me $550 16 years ago as he was so sorry it took so long.... that was a steal of a bargain for the work they did for me!!! he even had to bring in another guitar maker to help him as his shop's work was backing up!!!!

you may want to leave that SG and get one that works for ya

This is not a production made part that can be easily swapped out like a Fender. If you want a new neck, it has to be made for your individual guitar, and not pre-made from any generic specs. It will be expensive, and will take a while. As WhoFan said, you'll probably be better off selling or trading it toward one that already has the features you're looking for.

I do not need the neck to be refinished with the custom paintjob. I was probably going to go for an oiled maple neck with brazilian rosewood FB and no inlays... nothing fancy really, well maybe trapezoid inlays. I definitely understand that I can not simply purchase a seperate replacement neck. I would rather spend about $800 on this than around $1,500 for a new guitar that is your average SG. This thing has serious unique mojo and should be saved!

The biggest issue with major modifications like replacing a neck is this -

Replacing a neck can be a bit of a gamble, as no matter how well you can define or reference your goals in shape and feel, you can't ever be 100% sure of how it will actually feel and sound until the work is already done and the money is already spent. Changing something so large as the entire neck is replacing half of the guitar - it can have significant effect on the tone, and you're really only bring half the "mojo" of an old body to what is essentially a new custom parts build. It's a fairly large investment, and even if you have a very good idea what you're going for, you're not going to be guaranteed 100% satisfaction on its return.

I generally recommend putting a good effort in to looking around at existing instruments that you can play, feel, and listen to as they are. If you find one that really works in it's current state, you know exactly what you are getting before making the investment, and after sale or trade of your existing guitar you will often come out with less cost in the end. If you search and search, and just can't find an existing instrument to meet your needs then customization can be a reasonable next step. I just think it's generally wise to leave that option as Plan B.

You are gonna have a hard time having a custom madde maple neck with a braz board made and installed in an SG for $800...sorry to be like that but it's a fact.

maybe I should just try and have the FB removed and replaced for greater strength. I'll investigate some more.

If the neck and or neck joint are weak a new fretboard will do little to no good and it won't do a thing about the size and your "gorilla hands".

You have to make a desicion...get a quote on a new neck, I still say RS Guitar Works is your best bet for a soild, well done job and then, and only then decide if it's worth it to you do move forward...

When you strat doing things like re necking a set neck guitar the guitar starts to be come a personal thing that you will never get your moneyt back out of. If it's worth it to you as a personal player guitar then save big and make it happen. If the ida of dropping over a grand into a 71 GS that you'll never get back out of it turhs your gut then you have a few choices.

-Keep it as-is as a keep sake and buy another SG to play.

-Keep it as-is and deal with the neck issues.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

It is either going to get repaired/restored or is simply going to remain a wall piece. I'd rather put in the money and bring a very unique and 1 of a kind guitar back from the dead than purchase another general SG. It's a head turner and it'd be really cool to get it back into shape. I'm gonna call RS works tomorrow and investigate.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

A guitar that old should be restored and then sold, then you can buy what you want. Why destroy something that old? '71 is getting up there.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

I'd send it back to the Gibson Repair and Restoration Center. A '71 SG is worth it.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

What is functionally wrong with the current neck? From the original post it sounded as though it had no outstanding issues, but rather was simply not your preferred shape. I find it useful to clarify the distinction between restoration and customization. Restoration indicates a repair of a relatively universal flaw, whereas modifying an otherwise perfectly functional piece to meet your personal preferences is customization. I guess I'm not clear on whether there were problems with the neck other than it being a thinner 60's profile.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

This thing will never really have any vintage value because it does not have the original paintjob... It was redone by an artist who did a spin off of Claptons "the fool". The neck keeps bowing and it is too narrow for my hands. It had been neglected for about 10 years and had not been played until it fell into my hands. I am doing this for 75% customization and 25% restoration. The neck is too damn narrow at the nut for my huge hands. The only thing of any real value in terms of money are the T-Top pickups. I mean, it is possible that someone would pay alot for this axe and the custom paintjob, but I am doubtful. I want to restore/customize this thing for personal reasons rather than for money or $$$$$ value.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

Let's see the custom paintjob. Post some pics.

How hard would it be to do the paintjob on a guitar that already works? Because I can't see this ending in anything but disappointment the way it sounds like you're going.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

Sounds insane. Replacing the neck on a '71 SG?
