New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

+1

There's no guarantee on how the end result will be. Better off buying a new or used SG and keeping or selling this one as is.

You could spend hundreds and still not like the result. Now, you're out serval hundred $$$, brought the value way down, and exactly where you first started.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

BluesGuyJ - I am with you on wanting to do this.

I understand that sometimes the sentimental value of a guitar is more important than "what you could sell it for," or the calls to restore it simply because it's old and semi-rare.

It's yours, and if you want to keep that body, do it.

If I were you I would call Gibson Repair and Restoration at 615-244-0252 or call RS Guitarworks at 859-737-5300 (at the recommendation of 'the guy who invented fire').

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

RS Guitar Works said they couldn't do it. I am waiting to hear back from Dan Erlewine, I will call Gibson tomorrow. I will have my girlfriend take photos of the guitar some time tomorrow and will try to figure out how to post them.

You can not recreate this paintjob, the back of the neck is painted like a "totum" pole ad the body is pyschadelic with swirls, a frog, a butterfly and a crow painted on it. I will try and post pics ASAP. Anything will be better than how it is right now folks. You can either scrap this thing, or make it playable, bottom line. It might sound like Angus YOung SG with a new replacment neck, but it will sure as hell sound better than it does right now, correct?

I can't sell this thing either. My uncle gave it to me who got it from a guy who stole it and was in prison for 12 years.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

I'm all about you making it playable oif that what you want.

I mean, it's a 71 SG sure...thats old (ish) but it's not like it's a 59 Les Paul or a 50's Strat or anything...

If you want a new neck, GET ONE!

Sorry RS was no help...Dan can do it I know but trust me whan I tell you, it;s gonna COST youi BIG for his work...

Keep us posted on the project and best of luck!

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

And you take apart the neck joint of a SG - how?

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

A hammer.

I'd find the guy it was stolen from, offer whatever apology you can, and find an SG you can legitimately own.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

And you take apart the neck joint of a SG - how?

They can be steamed apart, similar to a dovetail, only you generally have to drill a series of holes along the joint in several of the frets slots along the extension. At least this is the way Roger Fritz showed me they were using at Gibson when he was heading the repair department there. Some techs may heat it from different angles and directions, but the joint can be steamed apart without a tremendous amount of difficulty.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

They can be steamed apart,

Oh yeah and the thin walls of the SG neck pocket for sure won't suffer one bit from that.

Best done by people who kept their 39 year old guitar under complete climate control for the last 20 years.

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

I have no idea about how to find the original owner man. Unless I print some photos in the news paper and risk getting myself or my uncle in trouble, I am all set. Trust me, I do not support theft, but there is nothing I can do at this point. I am waiting to hear back from Dave Johnson, Dan Erlewine had to pass this up. I'll keep you all posted

Re: New neck for older Gibson SG: who makes replacement necks?

I don't want to de-reail your thread but I think that it sucks that you knowingly have someone's stolen guitar.

If you've ever had a beloved guitar stolen you'd know how much that sucks.

If my favorite SG was ever stolen, I'd be pisssed and definetely want it back. I don't care if it was 20 years ago, I'd want it back.

I'm not really out to get anyone in trouble as much I would want the guitar back. I might actually let the whole thing slide if you returned my guitar.

If the roles were reversed I'm sure you'd feel the same way, just like you do now about the same guitar. You love that guitar. Its sentimental and means something to you.

But someone else did too. Its not yours.

Thats just not right.

Edit: You say there's nothing you can do. I don't feel that's true. I'm sure there are better options other than keeping the guitar.

Rant over. Go ahead and continue your conversation about modifying someone's else's guitar that is sentimental, rare, and stolen.
