New Old Body Day

I bought this last night for less than 150 total. I always been interested in the old antique barn, salvaged barnwood and reclaimed submerged wood. From a chemistry standpoint, it may make less of a difference now that they are roasting the new wood. Heaven only knows what grade Poplar this was when used for a barn 150 years ago, assuming it really was. I don't know the weight. I plan on putting a roasted Maple neck on this 'ventually.

I might burn a set of Longhorns from a small branding iron onto the forearm bout , and maybe do a tolled leather pickguard with some Duncan Antiquities.

From sellers description;

"This was part of a hand hewn poplar beam from a 120 yr old barn that had been taken down. If you count the growth rings and add the barns age it's probably a 200+ yr old pice of wood. I chose to leave the axe marks on the outside. I skip sanded it a bit then coated it with marine epoxy. When it set I gave it a satin finish to preserve the look".

I guess the back is unfinished, would you say?. Actually looks like a decent cut of tree to me? ;

The title of this thread reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode.

That's a good looking bod, for sure.

Re: New Old Body Day

That's just flat out pretty.

Roasted maple neck, you say. What fingerboard?
Silly thought... a rusted and mildly dented 18ga piece of sheet steel might make for a nice pickguard (clear-coated heavily, of course, to prevent shorting out!) Of course, so would the leather. I'm just thinking out loud.

Whatever you do, that is a really nice base to start from.

All opinions are welcome, because I have an open mind...and you will too when I fly down to Australia and cleave your skull in two with a hand axe.

HA! Lucky for me you swings slower than a sloth. I think i will counter that with an old fashion bareknuckle beat down. I was thinking after we could have some lunch and drinks.

Very nice Jerry. Take your time with this one. I am sure it will have sweet tone.
I don't know how they count growth rings but if the seller said 200 year old counting rings and then 120 in a barn, you got some very old wood in there. Maybe if lady luck is with you, you can get some old wood for the neck.
Antiquities would be the icing on the cake
