New (old) guitar...no pics don't shoot me! lol!

well here's the story...

i took my mother out to eat today and she gave me a little present that she thought it was time i had...an old epiphone acoustic that my grandma used to have...i couldn't believe it...this is the first guitar i ever touched in my life...i can remember going to my grandmas house and snooping through stuff and stumbling across this old dusty guitar case in one of her rooms and asking her if i could play it..(prolly 8 years old) and she said yes of course, so i pulled out this old acoustic with rusty strings which hadn't been in tune for who knows how long and "tried" to make some sort of musical sound (this guitar is probably what kept me from picking up guitar along time ago) i couldn't make it due much back then...didn't know squat about tuning and things and that always got me frustrated and would put it up...but i tried everytime i went over there...

well she died when i was in the 5th grade i didn't know what happened to the guitar and didn't think much about it...oh a few times i mean it was the first one i ever touched in my life...and of course i've thought about it alot in the past few years after i learned how to play a guitar and i guess my mom ran across it who knows where and knew i would want it...

so i've spent the majority of my day bringing it back to the state it needs to be in...i've cleaned it really good and gave it a bit of a shine...put some lemon oil on the fretboard, oiled the tuners, and put new stings on it...it has a crack on the top from the top right of the soundhole to the edge of the top running parallel to the fretboard...doesn't affect the sound though....so after all this time...i tuned it up and starting playing it...actually making chords on it of course and playing songs...songs i only wished i could play on it when i was a kid...it was pretty cool...

it's a smaller body don't know what wood the top is...i think the sides and back might be mahogany...they're kinda dark...i went to the a site that dates epi's and it said it was built in the kalamazoo plant in 1969...but i haven't researched what model it is or anything yet...it has no markings except "Epiphone" on the thin headstock and a pressed serial on the back of the headstock...nothing written anywhere inside that i can see...it has nice pearl dot inlays and the frets are in pretty good shape...it actually sounds pretty good and plays pretty easy for an old girl like she is...i named her "Mary" after my Grandma...and i'm pretty excited about fixing her up a bit and playing her...already came up with a little ditty on her...i'll try to get pics up in a couple days...i need batteries for my camera.

later on fellas,
mike

Cool story, Mike.

I have the Kalamazoo acoustic that my grandfather played for the majority of his life and I have the same kinds of memories that you do. He only knew three chords, and had no interest in learning any more. He was really proud of my advances in playing, though.

His was the first guitar that I ever played, and it's a very cherished memento and reminder of him, even if it is a complete dog of a guitar.

Where's the pictures?!?!:firing:

:jester: Just messin with ya!

That's a really cool story. I'm glad you ended up with it. A guitar like that can be the source of a lot of inspiration. Plus, it's something extra special to pass down to YOUR kids.

How's the action on it? You may need to swipe the saddle over some sandpaper to get it playing easier, as well as some work on the nut. Once it's all dialed in, it should play like a new guitar.

Awesome!

-Aren't family hand-downs the best? -I just got a late 50s all-valve hifi amp that's just begging to be used as a point-to-point practice/recording amp...

That's sweet. Sometimes those old ones just sound the best. Glad to see you ended up with it considering how you played it as a kid, or tried to.

the crazy thing about this guitar is how short all the frets are...i mean short...there's no noticeable fretware it's just that they aren't very big...i need to lower the action a little, maybe a new nut, that should help.

it definitely has a different sound/tone than my tak...my tak is open and much deeper...while this guitar is kinda snappy...i've got a good tune going on it capoed on the 4th...it's a tone that my tak cannot achieve...my wife made the comment that the guitar just sounds "old"...i said "she's not old, she's vintage"...lol

anyways i played her most of the day yesterday as well...workin on the tune that i came up with the other day...now if i my mom would just suprise me with on old les paul and a tweed next weekend...lol!!!:smack:  :smack:
