New P-Rail installed, questions

Hello all! Last year, I purchased a rather unusual Telecaster. It is a Scorpion, black laquer, rosewood fretboard, bound, set neck, mahogany, carved top. I am the 4th owner, I believe. The guitar came with a volume control, three way toggle and a pair of Lace Sensors, red and blue, mounted in the bridge cavity. The guitar originally came with a humbucker. I really had trouble getting a decent tone from the Lace pickups - way too shrill, with lots of bad high frequency feedback - it didn't play nice with my normal setup.

So, I decided to give the P-Rail a shot. Along with the new pickup, I purchased the triple shot and liberator 500 volume pot, whereby I delivered everything to the local Guitar Center tech, who has a really good reputation. The guitar sounds so much better, thank you very much. However, I am not sure how the pickup should behave.

With both switches towards the neck, the P90 is very loud and raucous. With both switches out, parallel humbucker, the sound is still loud and raucus, but I don't really hear a change from the P90 position. With both switches in, series hb, the tone really thins out and the volume drop is tremendous to the point of being unusable, especially when switching from one to the other - the change in spl is too much. Finally, with both switches towards the bridge, rail position, the volume is still really low with a thin tone. Again, I notice no real change between series hb and rail pickups.

I double checked the wiring and everything looks good. Is this normal behavior for a P-Rail? I can post pictures.

New P-Rail installed, questions

Uh, series and rails are very different. Series is NOT thin. Usually the complain is that it’s too fat.

You confirmed that when you say it’s the P90 or the rails it’s actually that side by tapping on it or similar?

You may want to post pics of the wiring.

Re: New P-Rail installed, questions

That isn't normal behavior; the series humbucker setting should be significantly louder than the other 3. Also the P-90 and parallel tones are similar, but not exactly the same. From your description I'm guessing that your tech wired the Triple Shot wrong, the 4-conductor cable on the pickup is hooked up wrong, or you have a defective Triple Shot. If you have a multimeter, you can read the DC resistance of each of the 4 settings from the end of a guitar cable plugged into the guitar's output jack.

The measurements should be
Series: ~18K
Parallel: ~4.4K
P90: ~10K
Rail: ~8K

I just measured the bridge P-Rail in my SG and ended up with
Series: 17.6K
Parallel: 4.47K
P90: 9.82K
Rail: 7.98K

Re: New P-Rail installed, questions

Something is wrong.

First, confirm what coils are working in every position of the switches by lightly tapping on them with a metal object. You'll hear what is working and what isn't. If the right coils are working (or if you don't know), post some detailed pics of your wiring. We will sort this out.

Thx for the numbers. I'll dig into it tomorrow after work.

Re: New P-Rail installed, questions

Well, this isn't helping -
bad triple shot from the factory.
