Hello all! Last year, I purchased a rather unusual Telecaster. It is a Scorpion, black laquer, rosewood fretboard, bound, set neck, mahogany, carved top. I am the 4th owner, I believe. The guitar came with a volume control, three way toggle and a pair of Lace Sensors, red and blue, mounted in the bridge cavity. The guitar originally came with a humbucker. I really had trouble getting a decent tone from the Lace pickups - way too shrill, with lots of bad high frequency feedback - it didn't play nice with my normal setup.
So, I decided to give the P-Rail a shot. Along with the new pickup, I purchased the triple shot and liberator 500 volume pot, whereby I delivered everything to the local Guitar Center tech, who has a really good reputation. The guitar sounds so much better, thank you very much. However, I am not sure how the pickup should behave.
With both switches towards the neck, the P90 is very loud and raucous. With both switches out, parallel humbucker, the sound is still loud and raucus, but I don't really hear a change from the P90 position. With both switches in, series hb, the tone really thins out and the volume drop is tremendous to the point of being unusable, especially when switching from one to the other - the change in spl is too much. Finally, with both switches towards the bridge, rail position, the volume is still really low with a thin tone. Again, I notice no real change between series hb and rail pickups.
I double checked the wiring and everything looks good. Is this normal behavior for a P-Rail? I can post pictures.
