New pickups day!

So, a friend ganzosrevenge wanted to throw some pickups my way, and we decided on an experiment. I'm a vintage pickup sort of guy, 6-7k on my singles, 8k-10k on my HBs.

So we did the logical thing and decided on some Black Winters, blackened edition. I pulled out a Brobucker and a Phat Cat neck, and dropped them in.

These things are TIGHT. I play a church gig, and for giggles I decided to play it. They worked perfectly! I didn't realize that something wound to that DCR could be as clear as these are. Coil tap mode gives me a wonderful single coil sparkle.

The alternative rock cover band I do also found this thing covering all the bases. I never really looked into super hot pickups, but this really changed my perspective! 20250307_133406.jpg

I dig that Tele. Custom model? I don't see that one in the catalog with that bridge and control layout.

I don't really worry about hot or not for output. I buy pickups for the EQ curve and magnet tonality. I generally prefer hotter, but meh, modern amps and modelers, don't care. More than enough gain for anything.

Ceramic pickups are often referred to as cold and sterile...perhaps to some.

But I can also describe them as crisp, articulate, and hi-fi. FYI - the Duncan Distortion can clean up way better than you would think too.

I love Black Winters. I personally find it really interesting that people find them so verstaile. They're the hottest Duncas I've tried. The EQ is even more mid-focused than the JB. Yet people find them versatile. Not gonna say they aren't. I haven't tried to play anything but the style of music that I play through them. But they're definitely very tight, focused, and aggressive, and I love that. I suppose that translates well to other style of musics too.

It's a GFS body with a G&L Legacy (strat) neck. It happened to line up with the scale length on that body because it's a little different from Fender. I like building partscasters.

Nice. I've been thinking of doing a GFS partscaster.

I love my Black Winters. They can do the extreme metal stuff, of course, but also a ton of other genres. They split well, as already noted, and respond nicely to both volume and tone knob adjustments.

How do these compare to the pickups you took out of there?

There was a Phat Cat neck and Brobucker bridge, though I think the bro is wound to about 10.5k. Solidly vintage tones, which are good, but I had that covered well with other guitars.

This thing is everything turned up, but tight. Single coil mode is sparkly, which was quite surprising.

I really think SD Marketing took a swing and a miss naming and marketing these pickups. I use my Black WInters for everything. The BWn is so overlooked. It cleans up nicely and is very full. I would suggest anyone playing rock or metal from the 80s forward check out a set.

I don't think they missed naming these pickups. I'm pretty sure they sell well as is. Hell, personally, I probably wouldn't have tried them if they didn't have the implied association with the Swedish Death Metal sound. For me, that was the selling point, and it indeed worked out because they sound fantastic too.
