New Pickups for a les paul copy, what would you suggest

Re: New Pickups for a les paul copy, what would you suggest

Yeah, ive been looking at a bunch of recordings and videos of les pauls with these pickups, so far I like the jazz alot for clean, but I'm wondering how that will sound overdriven, maybe the pearly gates or A2pro sounds better for that while still keeping alot of definition for clean

for the bridge, Im thinking pearly gates or A2pros

--for amps, I own right now a peavey bandit 112 and play that through a 4X12 live, when I can't borrow an amp, but thats subject to change. I'm looking to get a used marshall vintage modern head or possibly an orange ad30htc head by next summer
--for pedals, i use a tube screamer and a boss me50 I got for 20 bucks this past summer, the analog delay setting is decent, and besides that I use the MT-2 or ds1 settings to add a little extra distortion if necessary depending on the amp, and the BD2 as a booster

To my ears the Jazz retains more clarity under gain, and is a bit more hard-edged in the treble compared to the rounder, softer A2P. As to which is better, that's subjective. I definitely prefer the Jazz, but many others prefer the A2P. I haven't tried the PG, but I expect since it's also A2 it'll also have rounder treble than the Jazz.

To my ears the PG sits between the A2P and the Jazz, but closer to the A2P. It's like an A2P with a brighter top end.

if you're going for a Marshall, I'd get a PGn/Custom combo. That's a hard combo to top in a LP when going into a hot Marshall.

For the neck, I think the APH is too lame. And the 59 is too boomy in a LP or Strat. I don't like the sizzle of the PG, so that leaves the Jazz. Unless you can go unpotted boutique A2, which I highly recommend but it's expensive. If your LP has problems getting a tight enough neck sound a Screamin' Demon.

In the bridge, you really haven't been too specific. But in general I like Duncan Custom for hard rock, a JB with A2 for hard rock on the gainy side, a DD for metal. My favorites resolve around unpotted ones like 78 and WCR PAFs, but they are more expensive.

thanks again for all of your input, I think I'm going to either get PG set
or possibly a custom 5 or A2P in the bridge, or jazz in the neck

I'm going to make some trips up to different guitar stores now and try them out, I think thats the only way

final follow up question --- Is it possible to mount a p-90 pickup in the neck position with little or no modification to the body, and no modification to the circuitry

depening on what kind.... yes and no. humbucker sized p-90s(phat cats, gfs mean 90s, etc) fit perfectly. actual p-90s don't.

Yes, this is 100% correct! PGn/Custom into a Marshall via a LP is heavenly!

Ok, so I want to replace both humbuckers in my les paul copy, what would you guys (and gals?) suggest??

I play everything except for county, so I want something versatile, and I don't want to spend anything outrageous, cuz I'm saving for a computer for college also

so what pickups and for which position

Versatile you say . . .

. . . then * I * would go either with a set of '59s, or my personal fav's the A2P's !
