New Project

I was in the local Crime Converters on Friday, and saw a couple of the "experts" there restringing this guitar. Couple of problems...First,they were putting on bronze acoustic strings. Second, they were trying to jam a slide/lift nut under the strings between the nut and first fret!
I couldn't watch anymore and asked what they were doing and was told the boss had told them to restring it because it had been taking up space too long and it had to go.
They had decided to lift the strings so it would sound like,as they called it, a "Dopro" !! :omg:
So,I had to save it from the continuing cruelty....
They had $179 on it,I paid 80 bucks!
It's a 2015 HSS Squier Strat. It's brand new. It came with a brand new heavy duty gig bag. In the pocket,I found the sales receipt. Someone paid $329 for it 6 months ago and its never been played.

I've got a heap of Strat bits that need a new home so,as I make mods I'll post pics.
Who knows how this will end....

Re: New Project

AUS $, no? So to me that would be $57 for a $240 guitar. What a nice start to a new build story...

Re: New Project

Always great to hear a Cinderella story... especially if she gets saved from torturous barbarians!

Re: New Project

Is that an SE/"Strat Pack" guitar? Full body width, or thin? Good score, anyway. I've been wanting a project Strat, but got derailed and bought a Telecaster :p

Re: New Project

A guitar student of mine a couple of years ago had one very similar...lets just say it was MUCH nicer than the no-name beater strat copy I started out on ;) Should be a cool project for you–enjoy!

Re: New Project

Hey Andy, you still got those vintage Kent Armstrong lipsticks?
Yeah mate. I was in the shed last night trying to pick a set of pickups for this one. I don't want to throw a big dollar set in it,but there's a heap of other sets that would fit the bill. The Kent Armstrong's would need a new pickguard. That's too much like hard work!:thumbsdow
I'm leaning toward a set of Duncan Designs with a rwrp middle pickup. They're a surprisingly good sounding pickup.
If it all gets a bit boring, theres a heap of humbuckers,EMG's and other stuff out there that could make it interesting.

Yeah,its a skinny one. I have ideas for it,but if I don't have the part in the shed,it ain't getting it !
This could be the ultimate budget project!!

Re: New Project

Nice steal! Nice guitar. I'm wanting a single coil guitar for that single coil blues sound again. All mine now are humbuckers.

Re: New Project

UPDATE:
Duncan Designed SC 101 pickups fitted (middle is RWRP) with new covers, new tortoise shell S/S/S scratchplate, new switch, new Alpha pots, tone controls for bridge and neck,push/pull Vol pot to give 7 sounds (usual 5 + all 3 on,& neck&bridge together),frets levelled and dressed, fingerboard edges rolled, remove the ridge where fingerboard meets neck, front and back of headstock shaved and coated in shellac, new machineheads, new string trees, new blank neck plate fitted.
The only parts I didn't have in the shed were the machineheads,so that's $25 on top of the purchase price.
Total: $105

Re: New Project

Nice! Just happens to be an Ultimate Axe category just for this right now.
Thanks mate.
Is that category 101:
"BEST UNFINISHED KNOCK OFF STRAT PHOTOGRAPHED IN AN AUSSIE SHED WITH DOG" ???

I was going to enter the "BEST AIR GUITAR" category, but I put the bloody thing down somewhere, and do you reckon I can find it ??!!

Re: New Project

Nice work Andy, looks great. (Looks a lot like the way I have my '82 Tokai SilverStar, although that guitar has the big headstock).

What tuners did you get for $25 ?

Gday Crusty.
I found a place online a few weeks ago that was unloading Wilkinson stuff dirt cheap. I restocked the parts cupboard with a heap of their stuff.
We have to catch up sometime dude. Might have to do another SDUGF (Melbourne Chapter) jam day! It's been a couple of years and I'm sure everyone has some new toys to show off.

Cheers,Andy

Great score on the Wilky hardware, normally $25 would only buy you tuners that were no better than the stock ones. Ya did good !

Indeed some catching up is in order. Life's going by a bit too fast. I gotta give Will a call too. I noticed you seem to be around the forum in the evenings more in recent times. I hope life is treating ya well.

Re: New Project

OK. All done.
Ended up adding a SPST mini switch instead of the push/pull pot, replacing the second tone pot.
So,now it has 7 sounds with single tone and volume pots. Too easy!!
The Duncan Designed pickups are pretty impressive. They sound like nice, clean, standard Strat pickups should. With the switch,it does the "Gilmour" sounds quite well.
All the tidy up work on the neck has paid off. It really feels nice to play.
Feels good,plays nice,sounds alright,looks OK...Now I need to find it a new home.
