New ROUND guitar day..... Of all the things to type....

2 amazing things happened today!
1, it rained! For 4 minutes, first rain this year I think!
2. I was stumbling through pawnshops today looking for a few retro video games for my youngest son and came across this! It was a steal, so I bought it.

2008 Gibson SG. Mahogany, rosewood, 490r neck, and 490t bridge.
It was filthy dirty and has some wear for sure, but she's been home, bathed, oiled, polished, newly strung, and sounds great! I can't get over how light it is.
As I strummed it in the shop with it's corroded strings, it sung loudly, that's really what sold me on it, never even paid these much attention before today.

Nice! But really, it's only half round. Those horns on the cut aways are pretty pointy. Can't wait for a sound clip!

Congrats. The Faded Specials are a decent bang for the buck, especially the ones with 490R/490T (498 is too hot for me). I briefly owned a 2012 one that I got at GC brand new for $420 due to what I believe was a mis-tag. I didn't ask questions; I just took out my money. Problem is, at that price for an $800 guitar, it's hard to resist flipping on Craig's List. I had two other SGs that sounded nearly identical, so a few months later, I flipped the Special in as-new condition, for $600, IIRC.

Take it in for a fret dressing and cleaned up nut slots, soften the fingerboard edges, and you'll find it much improved.

Lovely example of Gibson's crappy cavity cleanup work. Router flash like crazy, just like every Henry J. era Gibson I've ever owned.

One more thing: Those cast Gibson Deluxes are crap. A tuner upgrade will help IME. Even the stamped Gibson Deluxes (which are old-school Kluson copies) are better tuners.

Agreed on the tuners, not my favorite for sure... I may look into tuners for this as well as my faded V same tuners, they're finicky as heck and don't hold as well as ...well every other tuner I've ever used ha ha.

Re: New ROUND guitar day..... Of all the things to type....

Dude that thing sounds badass. Maybe change the tuners if you want to, but I wouldn't mess with anything else.

Re: New ROUND guitar day..... Of all the things to type....

Will these fit?
I like the chrome look of the standard better than these green plastic vintage anyhow

They'll fit, but they're heavy and may contribute to neck dive. I have these on my SG with a set of 10mm conversion bushings. The posts on the original tuners wobbled, and I could never keep it in tune. OTOH tuning has been rock solid since the swap.

Nice! I have a faded too. I guess the previous owner did a full setup because it played like a dream out of the box. Great guitar.

Thanks buddy! It sounds different for sure! I like it so far.
The faded V tuners are worse, need those replaced, then maybe I'll get to these. Have to play it a lot more and see if it will love with me forever or not ha ha

Yeah, I know how you are. And I have benefited from it in the past. A certain V with a D-Activator set comes to mind. Even if I did eventually swap the bridge pickup for an X2N. Hey, it's still a set of Dimarzios

That guitar kicks some serious ass, I'm glad you're still rocking it!

Re: New ROUND guitar day..... Of all the things to type....

Just spent a few hours out in the garage sweating my balls off...playing the new SG.
It plays well enough, neck feels like my Gibby V maybe a tad fatter. Which I really love!
I Ran through all of paranoid and Sabbath bloody Sabbath, then through the only ac-dc album I can stand Flick of the switch. This things sounds really good. A lot like the faded V, a bit articulate with the Gibson pups. (I should have never sold the 500t out of my V. I've put a couple different Duncan's in it, a black winter lives there now, brutz, but not as "correct" as it was.)

I like this 490t so far. It breathes with the guitar, is very sensitive to the strength and aggressive picking, squeals when I need it, but it's quite demure compared to say an sh6. It's got a classy Air to it.
