New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

How long till we get to hear your views of it though? Weekend is approaching, make time, get that fella installed by then. I guess most people would like to know if its kinda like the C8 lol

I will TRY to get it in later today.

I went back to school full time for a new degree and the unrelenting homework from a 5-class course load saps nearly all my free time. Naturally, the wife drains 99% of whatever's left, so I have a ~1% window to git 'er done this weekend, ha ha! I'll do my best
;)

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

So, it took me a while longer than expected to finally get this installed. Work, family, school, pets going to the emergency room, car trouble...you know the deal.

Plus, the guitar I had planned it for ran into a setup issue with the Floyd Rose bridge that will require a small neck shim to correct. By the way, have you seen these? LINK <--awesome! Definitely the way to go if you find yourself in a similar situation :)

ANYWAYS...

Since the other guitar is taking some time off, I went ahead and put the Magnetar (aka: Satchur8 or whatever they're calling it this week) in my Jackson Rhoads V instead, which I am intimately familiar with, so I can offer some thoughts.

Initial impression?

This is everything I wanted the "EVO 2" to be!

Wonderfully articulate (not that the EVO 2 wasn't...it was). Great midrange presence with a gradual slope toward the upper-mids. A little bit of that "high output pickup" compression, but still pleasantly 'open' sounding.

It has a very balanced bottom end that's wonderfully thumpy and tight without being painfully modern like some of the newer designs. The highs have just enough edge on them to sting a bit when you dig in, but are in no way harsh and yield a nice body to single note leads. And, of course, the harmonic response is nothing short of amazing! Just as you'd expect from a "Joe Satriani" pickup.

My only problem with DiMarzio's EVO 2, which I also tried in this guitar at one point, is that, while the cut and overall tone was great and the output was improved from the original Evo, it lacked a degree of expressiveness. By that, I mean the ability to control the pickup's output and voice by changing playing technique and pick attack. I like to be able to go from a softer to a stronger response without touching the volume knob, whenever possible, but I also prefer medium-high output pickups, which often complicates things.

This is less a problem with lower output winds, of course, but I had hoped the EVO 2, being a "Steve Vai" pickup, would have had a bit more tonal range and complexity than it did. The EVO 2 was very clear, just as this Magnetar/Satchur8 is, but it always felt a little too in-your-face. Even when picked lightly, the EVO 2's response never softened up much. This pickup is much more controllable! Not to the degree of a PAF type, but very good for a hotter design.

Output-wise, my first thought was that the Magnetar/Satchur8 feels nearly identical to the EVO 2, which I later confirmed by looking back at the mV specs...both are 375, which makes total sense to me. However, it doesn't sound as aggressive as the EVO 2. Another point for the Satchur8!

What's also nice is that the Alnico 8 magnet doesn't smooth this pickup out too much or go the opposite way and make it too harsh. The 13K wind is really a perfect mid-way point. It really lets the magnet breathe and the top end response feels more like a JB than anything else! DiMarzio put some thought into this one.

I need to spend some more time with this pickup, but I have been increasingly impressed every time I play it. Usually, it goes the other way around!

I'll keep this thread updated with my thoughts.

Anyone else got their hands on one yet? :)

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

This pickup really makes me want to play Tool songs for some reason! I think it's the way the notes mesh, yet retain clarity, and the harmonic response. ;P

Also, I keep wondering how close this wind may be to an underwound Super D with an A8 mag instead of the Super D's big ceramic. The Satchur8 is tight and somewhat bright with a lot of Super Distortion-like feel and response. Very interesting!

On a side note, I will be sticking a NOS '80s MJ-wound TB-4 JB in the other guitar mentioned above once I get the neck shimmed, so I'll be able to do a side-by-side comparison with the JB and report back!

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

I can offer some updates on the Satchur8 pickup (aka: Magnetar).

I still have this pickup installed. I've thought several times about swapping it out, but I haven't convinced myself to do it just yet...

This pickup is really a progressive player's dream. Plenty of power for most styles including metal and the cleans are really nice for a bridge pickup, with clear bass notes and a balanced output across the thinner strings. Dream Theater type riffs and solos really shine, maybe even more so than with traditional "Satriani" type stuff!

If I had to compare it to other pickups I've played from memory, I'd say the Satchur8 is sort of like a Crunch Lab/Drop Sonic hybrid or maybe a brighter Alternative 8. In some ways, it also reminds me of the JB with a standard Ceramic in place of the stock A5 magnet (aka: the Dokkenbucker) or the very similar Duncan Designed HB103 model...more mids, more output, stiffer and tighter than a standard JB.

The Alnico 8 magnet in this wind is a strange beast, but it's crunchy and the harmonics are so on-demand and controllable, I can see why Satriani likes it! Especially with the addition of the Sustainer in the neck of his guitars.

I spent part of this morning comparing it head-to-head with the DiMarzio Axis bridge pickup in a Sterling AX40D I have. To me, the Axis bridge pickup is easily one of the best all-around "players" pickups ever produced!

The Magnetar/Satchur8 is noticeably higher in output and a little more compressed than the Axis bridge, but some players will appreciate that.

The bass response on the Axis pickup is little broader and rounder, but also a little less clear in a mix. The Axis mids are a bit more scooped than those of the Satchur8, as most here would expect based on the magnet alone. The top-end of the Axis has an almost tele-like twang when played clean, while the Satchur8 has a similarly bright but slightly less "3D" character because the notes on each string are more evenly represented and have less "bloom".

The trade-off is that the Satchur8 retains its clarity and string balance under higher amounts of gain, where the Axis starts to become a bit of a mess and lose some of its string-to-string definition. However, there is some overlap in the styles they can cover, including EVH, thanks to the somewhat spanky voicing of the Satchur8.

For the most part, I still stand by my earlier notion about the Satchur8 vs the Evo 2. The Satchur8 feels like an Evo 2 with more dynamics and control, even if only slightly.

I think my next step will be to compare this pickup back-to-back with the DiMarzio Illuminator. The Illuminator is also a fairly hot pickup that was voiced to sound like a Crunch Lab with a little less bass and some added top end presence. If I could change one thing about the Satchur8, it would be to enhance low-gain dynamics by putting more of the Axis pickup's "bloom" into the midrange character. That's where the Illuminator might actually be a better choice.

Other than that, the Satchur8 is a rockin' pickup for sure and not nearly as "Satriani-in-a-box" as some have suspected!

Does the Illuminator have good high mids? And is the Satchur8 mids more balanced like the EVO 2?

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

Wait, is this a joke or something? How does someone obtain a pickup that only exists in this thread? I can't find anything about it.

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

Just an observation: From the specs on Darth Phineas review, the wind seems to have a lot in common with the Norton.
Norton is 5.4k screw coil & 7.15k slug coil, compared to 5.62 & 7.42 for the Satchur8.
If it's anything like a Norton, it'll be a winner. The Norton is one of my favorite pickups ever.

I was actually curious as to how this pickup compared to a Norton.

I'm about to install a Norton into a guitar of mine that tends to work well with DiMarzios. I've had quite a few pickups in there.

The FRED was really cool, I just needed something beefier.
The D-Sonic was just OK
The Crunch Lab was AWESOME if a bit too hot.
The Steve's Special was meh in that guitar.
The Tone Zone was good but I was missing the personality of the FRED.

So the Norton is next.

But will the Satchur8 be next after that?

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

Nice. I've always been a fan of the Tone Zone, as well. Never tried the Fred.

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

I picked one up at NAMM yesterday at the DMZ booth, 54.00
ended up buying a set of PG-13 minibuckers too for 120 bucks.

Dude!!! I was there Sunday afternoon and I asked about it... the person there didn't even know if they had a guitar equipped with one. If I'd known they'd had one behind the counter I would have picked it up on the spot!

Good score - let me know how you like it!

Re: New Satriani Pickup...the "Satchur8"!

I almost got a heart attack when saw Satch's video about his 30th anniversary Chromeboy, it has the Satchur8 in it by the way.

That's a pretty slick looking guitar in person. People were taking pics with it left and right. And the guitar was subsequently getting covered in fingerprints. :D

Curious about the Axis bridge pickup. On my Axis it’s 1/4” away from the strings even with the strings held down at the highest fret. Is that how you have it set up in your guitar?
