New Speaker Day! Celestion Greenback G10 in my blackface Princeton Reverb

The UK made G10 Greenback replaced a Jensen Mod 10/70 (damn that magnet is crazy strong, got stuck to the reverb tank and the cone ripped a tiny bit when I yanked it off... pretty comical)

The Jensen Mod 10/70 was spikey, trebley and had waaaay too much bass. The Jensen also had some low level fizz that wouldn't go away.

On top of all that, it was just too loud and I couldn't turn the amp much past 2. The Greenback is much more quiet and I can go up to 2.5 without getting too loud. The Jensen had so much treble and bass that I had to turn them on 1 when I went for a clean sound... not any more. The more mid focused Greenback lets me use the treble and bass on clean sounds... and GONE is the fizz and spikey upper mids/treble.

Much more muscular sounding with a nice and neat attack that lends itself well to my style of playing... I like to spank the notes and the Greenback jives really well with "spanking it".

It did exactly what I wanted it to do... almost went for the Alnico Gold but this was half of the price and I didn't necessarily have to have Alnico (I thought that a properly voiced ceramic might just be right up my alley).

Anyone debating on whether or not to go Celestion with their Fender combos should try it.

I didn't play through this amp the last few demos I did, but it's making a total comeback now that it's matched with the right speaker.

In recent months i purchased a pair of G10 Greenbacks and a pair of G10 Alnico Golds.

The Greenbacks are less efficient, meaning you can turn your amp up more, esp compared to the harsh, bright Jensens. But the GB tones are wonderful, and i think Celestion got it right when they advertise the G10 GB as 'the 10 that thinks it's a 12'. Great little speakers in my opinion, and lightweight, too.

(The Alnico Gold 10s are also wonderful, and i've taken to using both the 2 x 10 cabs together, to combine the GBs and Golds. It's a great combination. Now i'm wondering what a little 4 x 10 Greenback cab would sound like, hehe).

I'm considering an Eminence Ragin Cajun 10" for my blackface (it would replace the original which I think is an Oxford. Anyone have any experience with these?

I haven't played that speaker in this amp but I've played combos that had that speaker in them.

Similar to what I got from the Jensen Mod 10/70. Not very midrange focused, really bright and bass heavy.

Didn't have the fizz that the Jensen Mod has but had something similar. Eminence calls it "grit" but one man's grit is another man's dirty fizz. Not a very scientific take since I didn't get to compare them in the same amp though.

Lots of guys put Ragin Cajuns in there Champs... anyone else with Ragin Cajun experience?

I was after: softer, more mids, better attack and more musical... not brighter, bigger bass and a more dynamic transient response which is what most people are after in their speakers.

I really just wanted more cream and I got it in spades with the greenback... the Ragin Cajun is almost the exact opposite and isn't very creamy at all from what I remember.

Interesting; yeah the EQ profile you describe for the Ragin Cajun is more or less what I am after (especially the bass for more punch). It sounds like your greenback, on the other hand, adds some flavor and character of its own and would be ideal for leads, blues, soul etc.

It may not be that relevant but I have an extension cab with a 12" Mesa C90 Black Shadow in it, and for grins I ran my Princeton into it....wow! Much louder, much less breakup. With overdrive it sounded HUGE. It really is amazing how much a speaker affects your sound. And it's cool that you can go the other direction, smaller speaker with more breakup and character, and get it to sing like a bird.

Pound for pound I don't think anyone has made a combo amp that can top a Princeton reverb.

yep. They are punchy and loud with firm lows.
Good speakers, but a lot more efficient than greenbacks, so it really depends on what you are after.
