Yummly.

These will be going into my custom Saxon 2x12 cab which should hopefully be ready by this weekend!

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

I'm not sure I've even heard of those before, they look cool though (like that ever made any difference to something you only ever hear)

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

warehouse = WGS speakers...basically modified Celestion clones. Modified to get rid of a lot of the honkiness or nasal qualities that a lot of Celestion speakers have.

ET-65 = G1265
Retro 30 = Vintage 30

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

I'm so close to wanting to get a pair of Green Berets just to see if it will replace my Governor/Wizard combo.

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

they sure do look a lot more interesting that the boring bare-metal celestions!

I don't know what WGS' return policy is, but it's worth a try. In my somewhat limited experience with them, their products have been stellar, both in terms of reliability and tonal goodness.

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

I have a pair of WGS in a 212 cab: a Retro 30 and a Reaper HP. Great sound, but be patient, these WGS took longer to break in than any other speakers I've had (estimated @ 80 to 100 hrs. before I was totally satisfied.)

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

I've been waiting for my next check to come to get me a Retro 30 to replace the 70/80 in my combo. Let us know how the Retro 30 sounds. I've also been looking at the Reaper HP as well but don't own a 2x12 to justify buying one but the Retro 30/ Reaper HP combo is something i'm dying to try along with a Governor/Wizard combo.

I already know how the Retro 30 sounds (I had a pair of em in my old 4x12).

The basic voicing is very similar to a Vintage 30, but tighter and more powerful in the bass, much smoother and way more open in the mids, not grainy or congested, and they have a chimey treble too.

I like them a lot.

The chime you describe is one of the reasons why I want them so my cleans will sound better. Plus from the clips I have heard the Retro soars when you add some dirt. Part of me is still leaning toward a Reaper HP though.

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

yeah the gainy sounds are fantastic with the Retro 30. Rich, crunchy and well defined. Though I feel like it only gets that way once it's broken in. It can be a bit grainy when it's new.
About the chime...there isn't a ton of it like you'd expect from a Fender amp for example...the retro30's chime is sort of like a sparkly/lively sounding treble. Fender-style chime comes a lot from the amp circuitry itself, not necessarily just the speakers.

About how long did it take for your Retros to break in?

Have you considered a G12H30 or variant, e.g. Wizard?

Re: New speakers day! huzzah!

When they started about 6 years ago, their speakers were 35 bux.
We bought tons of them.
Those were the days....:)
