New speakers or cab?

I have a Marshall 1960B 4 x 12 with the stock G12T-75's in them, I recently got a Peavey 6505+ head though and have read the typical metalcore set up is Peavey heads matched up with Mesa Boogie cabs.

Should I swap out the stock ones for V30's (which the Mesa cab would have) or get a brand new Mesa Cab?

Also have read about matching the 75's/V30's X pattern thing, but for live purposes only one speaker will be mic'd up so on stage won't be very level.

Do the V30's have any mid-range? Low end?

The type of music I play is drop tuned chuggy stuff, more of the modern hi-gain metal bands though not the classic metal.

Think ADTR/Chunk No Captain Chunk and Bring Me The Horizon:

You should be fine replacing the speakers in your cabinet. Also rewire it mono-only and replace the jacks / speaker wire (16 gauge) as the stuff Marshall uses these days is a bit sub-par. In terms of tone, V30s have a lot more midrange than T75s and the high end is much less grainy. Another thing to keep in mind is that Mesa 4x12s (except the traditional) have larger internal volume for increased bass response. The low end from your cab won't be quite as big, but it won't be as loose either which is a win in my book.

Re: New speakers or cab?

Yeah I was going to go for the Marshall re-branded V30's which is slightly cheaper than the Celeston normal ones.

Should I swap all 4 out or keep 2 of the 75's in and do the X pattern?

The chugs must lock in with the kick drum however not all the tone will come from the speaker!

Re: New speakers or cab?

The V30/T75 x-pattern is really popular with metal players these days because you get the bigger bottom and cutting highs of the T75s combined with the fatter mids of the V30s. I'm not sure if they still do so, but Bogner Uberschall cabs used to be set up this way. I've never been a fan of speaker mixing for the reason you cited previously; unless you mic one of each your PA sound is going to be missing something.

Re: New speakers or cab?

Yeah when we play shows the sound guy will only mic the top left/right one at a time so if mixing it'll be pretty useless.

Recording might be different, but then that's recording.

Re: New speakers or cab?

I'm going to mix 2 x V30's with 2 x G12T-75's, in an X formation.

If I don't like the mix I'll put another 2 V30's in, but let's see how just 2 V30's go.

Re: New speakers or cab?

6505s through 1960As with V30s sounds absolutely BEASTLY GOOD. Crunchy, beefy and articulate. Lots of punch and projection as well. IMO, 6505s sound better through a smaller cab than through a big oversized cab like a Mesa Rectifier cab. The inherent bite and snarl of the 6505 kinda gets dampened with a big cab whereas with a normal sized cab it is there in spades.

It's a no brainer - get the V30s.

the V30/T75 mix will also be pretty kickass, but on stage I would only mic a V30. The T75 tends to get lost in a mix.

Yeah the G12T-75's have a bit of fizziness hence why I wanted some V30's.

As long as the sound guy mic's the V30 then I'll be alright I think, will hold back on a Mesa cab til I have way more money!

Re: New speakers or cab?

I might try them if I don't like the V30's with the G12T-75's mixed. Pretty sure I will though cos of the low end blend and mid range hump.
