New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

JOLLY

Super Simonologist
Well, I need another bass like I need another drink of whisky...lol. Ya know, I got a couple of Carvins that I absolutely love, a Hamer 12 String that is awesome, A Kramer 5 string that is cool for what it is, and an old Kramer P/J from the mid 80's that I've had ever since then.

But alas, I have always wanted a Spector Bass. I've always wanted that big super huge meaty tone. I think Mike Starr from Alice in Chains is the main reason I wanted one. I just always loved his tone.

Anyways, I was perusing through Craigslist last night just farting around. It's just something that I do. I don't "NEED" anything really when it comes to musical equipment, but I'm a freakin junkie, and I just love to look at gear. I also do very well at scoring GREAT deals on everything that I have ever purchased...lol

Anyways, lately for some reason, I have been looking for Spector basses on Craigslist for the hell of it. Well, low and behold, I saw one last night for a freakin steal!! At least I thought it was a steal. It was a Spector Legend 4 Classic for $200. I 'bout sh!t when I saw that price....considering that they go for around $750 or so new.

It was a finish that I've always hated, but I really didn't care since all it is going to be is my new recording bass. However, I sat here last night for a couple of hours looking at different pictures of the basses with that finish, and it really grew on me, especially when I watched some videos of people playing them.

Now, I've been jonesing for one as of late with a P/J pickup combination because of Mike Starr, but for $200, I said fukk it....I'll make the soapbars work for me.

Well, I just got home from Nashville from purchasing it. I haven't plugged it in yet, but it sounds amazing already unplugged!!

Anyways, I present to you......my new Spector Legend 4 Classic in the holoflash finish. Now, the funny thing about this finish is this. When you look at it, it really just looks like one of those black paisley Fender Strat/Teles with a bunch of finger prints all over it, kind of. Now, when you do some crazy shifting in the light, and take different angled pictures of it you get this.

Here are some stock pictures:

Here are some pictures that I took of mine with my crappy cell phone. I took some of these pictures with the light on as well as off.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

Been jamming. Damn, what a nice deep, full, meaty, growl machine this bass is!!

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

Not to mention it's one of the coolest finishes I've ever seen!

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

I would have jumped on that too. And I love that finish, I'm surprised you didn't like it at first.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

That is sweet! Last Bass I owned was a Spector, my dad has it right now. Awesome tone!

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

I'm lucky enough to have 2 Spectors - a Legend Classic 4 in PJ, and an NS2004 in blue with two humbuckers.

By far, my favorite basses.

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optic cable

You still want PJ tones? The EMG-35 J and -35 P4 will drop straight in. You may need to change the balance pot to one rated for low impedance pickups.

+1

You'll need to change the balance pot and may want to replace the preamp; I'm not sure the Tone Pump Jr. is compatible with active pickups. Budget is probably important, so I'd recommend an EMG BTS circuit (or BQC if you really want a 3-band) as it gets about 90% of the Hazlab tone at roughly $50-90 instead of the $400-500 a Haz runs. An EMG BTS/BQC will also fit in the control cavity without mods, unlike the rather large Haz board which requires routing in some basses.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

Good to know... I have a BQC circuit and a pair of 35DC's I was thinking of putting into my NS2004...

The Spector USA NS-4 has used a pair of EMG-DCs since its introduction in the early 90s. Keep in mind that the EMG-DC was designed for the Modulus Sweet Spot basses so it can be a little bright in the bridge position. If that ends up being the case, a CS may work better in the bridge.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

I'll double check mine... I think they're HZs... I know the PJs in the Legend Classic are... (was thinking of putting a Bartolini set in that one...)

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

I've been playing the hell out of this thing for the past three hours. Man, this bass sounds killer!! I bet when I put on a set of DR Lo-Riders it will really blow me away.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

If you are enjoying the stock pickups that much, stick with them.

Alternatively, another pickup that will drop right in is the SD NYC Soapbar. This should work with the stock control harness. Just find room for a pair of DP3T series/split/parallel mode switches.
I guess whoever originally owned it put some EMG HZ pickups in it. I know there are plenty of other pickups out there that will blow those away, but it sounds fantastic as is right now.

Re: New Spector Legend 4 Classic Day!!!!

Nope... pretty sure they came from the factory that way. Both of my Spectors have HZs in them.

Cool. I thought they came with the SSD (Stuart Spector Design) pickups in them. Well, at least they do now I believe. I guess originally they came with the HZ's?
