New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

Over the decades, Telecasters with Gibson style pickups have sounded meaty - whether made of Ash, Alder or Mahogany.

. . . oh yes :firedevil

Unfortunatly the Classic vibe series starts in here Austrlia at 799 and you can get a MIM tele for 899 :(

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

How is that J5 Tele anyway? Short of building one from Warmoth parts, it's nearly everything I want in a Tele. Anything noteworthy?

It's not too bad of a guitar. It's up for sale, though, considering I'm much more in-tune with my single coil side again.

I like the neck on it, it's thin, satin and fast. The only thing I don't like are the obvious Squier electronics and semi-heavy weight to it. Pretty good guitar for the money, though.

How were the frets, out of the box? Electronics are a non-issue for me a this point. A nice, smooth feeling neck and HH body, that resonates well is what I'm after.

The frets are fine. I actually kind of even like them. They're a little on the bigger side and make playing pretty easy.

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

The thing about "FMIC hurting Fender sales because Squier sales are too good" is very real.

My favorite Squier ever, the Squier '51, was discontinued because they were stupid good, and they cost $99.

People were walking into guitar stores, playing a pile of MIMs and then the '51 and going, "Wow! This feels better than all the others!" and walking out the door having spent $99 as opposed to $500.

FMIC caught on, that the Squier '51s were essentially "too good," and they could either raise the price, or make them "less good."

Making an Indonesian Squier "less good" didn't seem feasible, and to make any sort of gain in defending MIM Fenders' mid-market marketshare, they'd have to make the '51s cost $400. yeah right.

So they threw up their hands and discontinued them.

Now mid-market shoppers are buying MIM Fenders again, and all is right with the world.

Wait, What's that you say? People are actually buying Squier Classic Vibes over MIM Fenders?

No problem --- Fender learned their lesson with the '51 and priced the Classic Vibes at $350.

They had the exact same problem with the Squier Pro Tone series in the 90's. They were essentially Squier's built to (some say above) MIM specs. They had alder bodies back when MIM Fenders had poplar bodies. Not surprisingly, they cut into the MIM sales big time.

If you see a Pro Tone on the used market, pick it up. They're excellent guitars.

^You can have this guitar now for the low-low price of $290!!

But, I ordered one of the new thinlines last Friday and its status still hasn't been updated. What's up with musiciansfriend?

They tell me every day the guitar is going on sale but it still says it isn't.

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

I played both new styles today...the Thinline was a feather weight guitar for sure. The deluxe feels more solid, and they both feel as good to play as any MIM I've used.

Retail there was $329 for the Thinline and $369 for the Deluxe...not a lot of cheese in any case.

Exactly my logic. If you make something too well, for too little, people will overlook the small things and save $500 for parts. Hence, jack up the price, and people who associate MII or MIC as lower in quality than MIM will buy the MIM RI's, and those who are a bit more adept at "tinkering" will buy the squiers. If you want proof of what squiers can do with some hotrodding, ask trevorus on this forum. He's got a Squier that absolutely screams.

You can add me to the list of squier hotrodders. I modded my Vintage Modified Strat with a custom Warmoth pickguard and a Dimebucker. It added a whole new depth of sound and clairity to the guitar.

My strat is still a work in progress though. I only did a quick and dirty job of wiring it together, despite having 2 new pots and a 5 way switch. Currently it is wired as only a 1 pickup and 1 volume pot guitar... and the pot works backwards. Other than that I'm very happy with the results so far.

Im-Six, don't take offense to the hot-rodding statement. I meant that as a good thing. It's great for anyone who wants an inexpensive guitar that's well worth making an individual statement. swtiches, pots, bridges, etc. I'm thinking that these new VM's will be the next project for me to hotrod. I admit it, i played a few and the more of them i play, the more i like them.

Both of the ones I played were OK, but I can't say how they really play, cause they have 9s on tem and I like 11s for teles.

The sounds were ok, with some of that skinny midrange that makes a Tele sound like a Tele.

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

Bought my son a Squire bass for his birthday last August…wow, the fit and finish is quite good. The hardware is low end but that can easily be remedied. Fender is probably cannibalizing its own sales as others have mentioned. If you have to have Fender on the headstock then you won't buy Squire. But if you want a good base platform for hotrodding an instrument then Squire is worth the look.

Re: New Squire Classic Vibe Guitars For 2010

I like the idea of the double bound sunburst one. It's a classy look and with good pickups will sound fine.

Provided you get one with good fretwork and a good nut. In my experience squiers are hit or miss on these fronts.

I don't care how many pieces of alder it is... this is a major step up for squier to finally offer a full body-depth alder tele. One less thing you gotta worry about if you want the fender features at a budget price.
