My Warmoth neck came with the Earvana nut but I hated it's tone, dull and lifeless.
I tried the LSR but could not get it to stay in tune.
A mate of mine suggested I try a stainless steel nut as he'd recently had one fitted to his Strat and loved it so I took the plunge.
The guy had to fill the slot with Rosewood to get the intonation point right but I think he's done a great job.
He's cutting the slots tomorrow so I should get the finished guitar back on Monday.. can't wait.
Anyone else tried Stainless ?

Re: New Stainless Steel Nut

Going to be great - Certainly a bigger pain to make than bone. Difficulty in cutting is going to depend on the alloy and heat treatment.

We've had the old LSR nuts - Construction was a little different but I don't remember objecting to the tone.

Re: New Stainless Steel Nut

The guy charges more for a stainless nut because of the extra work involved but we agreed a sensible price.
He assures me that he can get the slots mirror smooth and the end result is spectacular open string harmonics !!!

Re: New Stainless Steel Nut

I'm using diamond needle files, the same ones I use on bone and phosphor bronze. it's a myth that stainless is so hard that it damages your files, it's just harder to work with that's all. we'd discussed using bone and phosphor bronze but when I noticed that the neck had stainless frets and I had a piece of stainless that I'd started working for another customer who hadn't followed through I came up with the idea of putting one on Mark's guitar as we have a mutual friend who I made one for twenty years ago and which is still going strong and holding it's tuning well.

My only concern is that the absence of string trees means I will have to make the nut slots deeper, which isn't ideal. Tone will probably be quite bright and punchy but the main difference seems to be - as with stainless frets - not so much that there is increased high end response, it's more like the high end harmonics don't decay as quickly as they do with softer materials so chordal work is more defined and articulate.

Re: New Stainless Steel Nut

The Hipshot tuners are staggered ( I've just ordered the medium height so it'll have 2 tall, 2 medium, 2 short ) but I have trees if needed. ;-)

Re: New Stainless Steel Nut

Almost complete and looking superb.
Needs to do the final shaping and polishing so will be collecting the guitar on Monday.
