New (to me) Gibson design.

I don't really know what to think yet. It's kind of like they want to be more "extreme" than the Explorer, but won't quite commit to doing anything really "out there." Also I like the description of the body wood: "The Shark Fin is comprised of several pieces of the finest mahogany, secured together by Franklin Titebond 50 glue, which provides an everlasting bond."

Anyway, without any further explanation: The Gibson Sharkfin.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

looks like they gave a monkey a body blank and a router, what a piece

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

it's just an Explorer with a chunk missing from the back

coolish, trying something new or whatever but as a former BC Rich enthusiast i give it a "meh"

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

I applaud them for trying to reach the younger market segment, it's the future. They should take it a step further and offer HSH and HSS PU configurations, and offer wild colored finishes.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

They should use it to bludgeon the idiot who designed it, and then bury it deep underground to never be seen again.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Nah, know what? Here's a serious response.

The only people who would consider buying that POS are kids, and there's nothing stopping those kids from dropping 1/2 the cash on an import that would turn out to be twice the guitar and NOT made out of "multiple pieces bonded together."

This thing represents more of the same shop-floor-scraps-made-into-guitars thinking that brought us the Zoot Suit plywood SG.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

to me, its not mind blowing, but Ive always been a fan of pointies.. So, I appreciate the effort, and really like the headstock. But that shape needs a floyd. And I DONT appreciate the bonded wood build.. To me that sounds like they are trying to sugar coat market plywood. glue together scraps so they have 0 cash outlay, glue it together and sell it as revolutionary. Im sure it'll be $1000 +.

think Monty python's meaning of life: Every scrap is useful, every scrap is great, for every scrap thats wasted, accounting gets quite irate...

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

OMG I soooo hope they do not offer me a job...

Only what, 25 years to do the reverse headstock thing and put out a guitar, sans floyd, reminiscent of VH WACF?

My first meeting would involve bringing in various designers, approvers, and marketers and just shooting them. I'd have to save one bullet for myself though - because no matter how dumbass I think it can possibly get - there would always be something one notch worse...

dude how do you think they make crazy pointy guitars in Asia? You think the slave laborers there are using one-piece slabs of fine mahogany to make guitars shaped like that?

most guitars are multi-piece bodies and they have to use some kind of glue to put them together...especially if the shape is something totally crazy like that...Gibson's just telling it like it is instead of saying "MAHOGANY" when they mean "mostly mahogany and maybe some alder but definitely a veneer to make it look like a one-piece mahogany back and possibly another veneer of a flamed maple top with plenty of glue to hold it all together"

and you would probably grudgingly admit that Zoot Suits aren't bad guitars if you played one. I sure did..

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

^^ part of the appeal if you ask me. you walk on stage with a rainbow striped SG and you better bring the ****in rock or you're gonna have some explaining to do.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

^Am I the only guy who doesn't hate the Zoot Suit design? It reminds me of Clapton's psychedelic SG.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Love Explorers.
Hate this piece of crap! :barf:
Bit of EVH Destroyer, bit of Hamer Scarab, and a whole lot of poor taste.
More style-less rubbish from the people who once ruled progressive guitar design. Unfortunately, that was 50 years ago.

I remember reading somewhere, (might have been the first Guitar Player mag. interview in ....er....'78???) EVH saying one of the dumbest things he ever did was taking the chunk out of the back of the Destroyer. It just ruined the tone and sustain of the guitar.

Hey,Gibson will now sell you one "Pre-Ruined" !!!:naughty:

Can someone please confiscate the Gibson (alleged) Styling Depts crayons, before they strike again!!

Cheers,PJ

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Me thinks they've missed the point, and the boat by almost thirty years.
It's a better idea than the reverse vee, in fact it's a good idea, just not very well executed.
It's not as mad as the old Hamer Scarab and not pointy enough for ya average metal head.
Oddly, although the zoot suit looks worse, it's straight craziness appeals to me much more than that.
I think there are a few simple guitars that Gibson could easily bring out which would sell much better than things like this.
1 - LP studio with a floyd
2 - Double cut LP with the explorer headstock (available with, or without a floyd or perhaps a non locking trem)
3 - the above but done properly like EVH's destroyer

It's simple ideas like these that Gibson could have tried years ago and if they had they could have beaten PRS and Dean to it. Ok PRS may well make much better quality instruments, but that Gibson logo still sells.
