New (to me) Gibson design.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

my major beef with this new guitar is as follows:

what i dont understand about what gibson are doing right now is that none of these models i see seem to have potential to have mass appeal. They seem to be directed at such a specific audience that i cant see them justifying the production/RnD costs. Personally i hate pointy guitars so i may just be underestimating the audience out there. But lets take the similarity between the one posted in the OP and the ESP, i think it was, that was posted later. There are already a bunch of companies, ESP being one, making very similar guitars, and they have been for a while. Do gibson expect that audience to sell and then buy a gibson just because its a gibson? In 10 years ill bet you barely see any of these new gibson models in stores.

I dunno, maybe its just me since im more of a fender guy. Dont get me wrong because i love the way LPs and SGs look and sound, i wish i could own one, but i just have never been able to get on with the scale length. I just dont see how gibson hopes to do anything significant by trying to break into an already established market with a product that essentially doesnt offer anything more than whats already out there.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

...difference here being, i don't know any $600 imports that are as good as $1500 Gibsons...not ones that don't at least need new pickups or have some major count against them like 3-piece necks and poly finishes...

and finally giving us a Les Paul with a built-in bong.

I was gonna ask if you were effin high when I read the first bit. The last line tells 'yes' That is not even a comparison.

We can go down to a GC, blindfold you, slap guitars in your hands all day. I got 10 bucks says not only can you NOT tell the Gibson from any of a variety of guitars, but your ears and hands pick a Hamer, a Dean, an Ibanez, or a whatever as the best sounding / feeling. Maybe not for 6 bills - but you better not take it up to 8. That is still half price.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Yeah i have one of those in my shop. It's not an SG.

Please keep trying to make me look stupid on the internet <33
OK!

Yes! It's a Steinberger! they don't make SG's.Even though the parent company is Gibson, who do.Transtrems are for/from the Steinberger line.
Even Gibson don't get their wires crossed when it comes to what goes with what line. But at 20 something you'd have amazing insight into management, wouldn't you? That's why your working in a guitar shop?

Gibson's other franchises besides Epiphone are kinda mysterious to me...dunno why they bought Steinberger if they're not gonna make any transtrem SG's.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

^^ Whatever man...Fender's still got Strats with Floyd Rose and EMG's you can get...which are arguably "Jackson" features.

I'm saying buying the rights and licenses of another guitar company could be used to ENHANCE your current company, in such creative ways as putting high-tech Steinberger hardware on the vintage-style Gibson guitars so many people love.

Similar ideas would be Hamers getting closer to classic Les Paul styling than ever with Telecaster body styles...or cool Fender / Ovation hybrid acoustic electrics...or something as simple as Charvel getting the strat headstock back...

I'm not sayin I know everything; I just don't understand why you would buy another company in the same field as your company and not 'mingle' the ideas...Lots of 'modern' players like Gibson aesthetics but want things like crazy locking trems...so why not a Transtrem SG?

I'm sorry if that response angers and / or frustrates you enough to keep this going but it's my nature to be creative.

I'm glad you think i'm so green in the horns man but i can tell a nitro from a poly finish by feel...There are LOTS of cool cheap imports out there that I'd really dig and some of them definitely come close to Gibson once you've got the right pickups and electronics in there but like you said, the ones that are closer to 'right' are closer to the $800 mark, at which point i'd rather get a faded Gibson.

I know you guys think I defend Gibson cuz i'm a salesman at a guitar shop but that's so ****ing stupid i don't even know where to start. I get paid better commission on Paul Reed Smith and Fender stuff. I could sell tons of Epiphone Les Pauls at full price but I'd rather give you a huge discount on a real Gibson. I want guitar players to play good guitars and time and time again, the Gibsons in my shop are the best. Dude's who've been on this forum as long as I have might remember a 16-year-old Empty Pockets talking about how they're overpriced crap and you can do better with an Epiphone and some Duncans...well...16-year-old EP thought he knew everything and has learned a whooole lot since then.

You old guys being so jaded about Gibson makes me think I still have a lot to learn but, until MY experience tells me otherwise, Gibson's making the best guitars and they're worth the money...but only a n00b pays sticker price at a music store :smokin:

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

That looks like a Corvus crossed with an Explorer. Well, I wouldn't buy one, but one man's garbage is another man's treasure.

Yes! and Gbsons come stock with Seymours and so on. I agree it would be a possibility that has been omitted by Gibson but what I was saying in a "stupid old bastard way" is that's one of those "management decisions" that get so often posted about here.Pretzel logic:banghead:.On the other hand; What would we know!:bigthumb:[us forumites]

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Yeah...as much as i'd like them to, Gibson isn't pushin at 100% like they should be.

Reading those reviews of the company by employees was kind of an eye-opener...

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

And the rainbow coloured plywood guitars weren't? Boi you playin' me.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

it looks like a gibson explorer, an ibanez xiphos, and a jackson wr1 had a menage a trois and this is the child that resulted from it.

We'll need a Fender Maurycaster to determine the results.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

I don't mind so much that they talk about multiple pieces of wood in this one, as far as i know not uncommon with these styles. My main gripe with it is that the shape just doesn't look quite right. The proportions of the cutouts are slightly out to my eyes. Jackson with their Warrior and similar ones like the Ibanez Xiphos got the proportions of everything to look balanced. Whilst it isnt a shape i go for, they do look cool. The Gibson on the other hand looks like it was rushed out without much thought.

Yeah, it's as bad as that Dave Mustaine thing from a few years back that he clearly just drew on the back of a napkin and sent off to the ESP custom shop for a few $.

That's the thing, they took an Explorer and made cuts to it, and that's it. They could have reshaped it a little better, and the lower horn with the jack needs to be redesigned. Something like this:

Could probably be made from a stock Explorer template.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Even though a Floyd would make it look better, the Sharkfin is still UGLY like the ESP Mustaine Axxion. The reverse headstock is cool though.

Looks like a BC Rich Warlock mated with an Ibanez Iceman.

gibson must have a grow room ,or maybe a chemistry lab at the factory..what the hell is wrong with those design people?thats another ugly guitar by gibson.the les pauls and explorers are works of art, this thing looks like it might be a weapon in the next star trek movie.

LOL, now not only is Ed Roman ripping Newc´s axes off, RAN from Poland is as well.... :smack:

Then again they´ve always been the Polish version of ESP ("Let´s rip all the US companies designs and sell cheaper guitars.")

It´s a very sad state that this industry is in IMO....

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

Not the worst of intentions, but it looks like a lame Jackson Warrior copy to me. It's like Gibson set off in that direction, then half way through lost interest and took some chunks out of an explorer and called it a day.

The Warrior and the Ibanez that Dino uses...

Blimey i didnt realise id already posted earlier in the thread! Yeah sure the Ibanez is very very very similar to a warrior to put it lightly, at least the shape looks proportionally good and balanced (to my eyes anyway)
