New toy inbound...

I decided that I needed a good practice amp that is roadworthy and has good tone. I hope I made a good choice. :fingersx:

Re: New toy inbound...

I've heard those are probably the most under-rated amp out there.

Enjoy that lil' feller ! :D

Re: New toy inbound...

That there is the only Marshall that ever used 6V6's. Unfortunately, they scrimped on the 12AX7s, so is a bit short of a '6V6 Plexi' gain-wise. Still, they are highly-thought-of and underrated Marshall rarity. I wish I had one.

Re: New toy inbound...

Not too worried about the lack of 12AX7's. Got plenty of toys to kick the front end with if needed. I can hear the Tubulator calling it's name right now as a matter of fact.

After buying the Silvertone 1482, I've started jonesing for 15 watt amps with 6V6 tubes. They just have a sweetness to them and their volume levels are so pleasing and non-painful. It's the perfect small club/studio/practice amp IMHO. The Studio 15 has a built in attenuator and speaker cab sim (in the headphone jack only) and you can unplug the 8 ohm speaker at any time with no harm done to the amp as it always has a load built in. Balanced XLR out is another cool feature. Add an in line cab sim to that and then to your PA or tape and you're set. Same with the unbalanced line out.

The clips I've heard bring a huge smile to my face. Sounds like a JCM-800 in a very small box. If it had one more 12AX7, it would probably have been the ultimate practice amp. It's pretty close right now.

Re: New toy inbound...

I love my EL84-based 18 Watter, but my next build is going to be a 6V6 Plexi. I think a 22-watt "marshall" with 6V6's is about the ultimate for us non-arena-playing hacks. Got a donor amp sitting on the shelf all set.

Re: New toy inbound...

Marshall 4001 Studio 15. Only 435 were made. Values are rising quickly for this rare amp as people understand just what a cool little animal it really is. Current sales are for roughly $650 or so. Look on Ebay completed sales for accurate figures. Pretty steep for a practice amp, but not so much when you think about what it can do and how good it sounds. Most who own them love them. Mercury magnetics makes transformers for them, so they are fairly repairable at the moment. If I could find one that was blown or damaged, I would snap it up and repair it with a new tranny set in a heartbeat. These are easier to record with due to the lower SPL. I expect the price to go up dramatically as it becomes more and more known and as rarity becomes an issue. If you can find someone who is crazy enough to let go of one for a good price, I'd advise getting one.

If you've ever considered getting a marshall 18 watt clone, why not get this instead and get a real marshall for even less than it costs to build an 18 watt clone? I was thinking really hard about building an 18 watt TMB myself, but settled on buying one of these instead as it's basically similar and it's an all-in-one unit with lower wattage, more functionality and lower price tag.

Just checked the completed ebay sales. Mine was $650. Last one before that was $611. Dude has one on there for $800, but that's just outrageous and it's pickup only from Yuma AZ. Not even a good deal if you live near Yuma IMHO.

These are GREAT amps. I remember one at my local music shop back in the late 80s. I came real close to buying it several times but never ponied up the $. It was just "too cute" :laugh2:

Congrats Bro! Thats a cool score :bigthumb:

Re: New toy inbound...

Lucky bastard. :laugh2: Those are way cool amps. There's very little difference between 15 watts and 18 watts volume wise so you made a good choice.

Question, how does the amp always have a load on it when the internal speaker is unplugged? Is the load built in to the cab sim? Normally, cab sims don't provide any load at all, they're just a bandpass filter to make it sound like the amp is plugged in to a speaker cabinet.

To be completely honest with you, I have no clue. It's just what the manual says. I looked the manual up online. Mine hasn't even shipped yet, so I shouldn't count my chicken before it hatches per se, but hopefully it will arrive in one peice and be as described. Owner says it's in "fabulous" shape. Sold it after selling an Orange amp, so that's a good sign.

I just found the manual too on drtube.com and see that it says that. That's pretty neat actually. Congrats!

Re: New toy inbound...

OK I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS -

THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE PERFECT AMP FOR ME

I was bout to buy a Blues Jr Relic again, and now THIS! Oh my god! Small TUBE amp with a bluesy breakup! does it have decent clean? verb?

Honest to god, the Mesa Subway Blues and the Blues Jr are the only sub-$1000 small amps I like - and the Mesa has issues.

WOW!

Re: New toy inbound...

Thanks for the well wishes. Just hope it gets here ok.

Olin - There have to be many studios in your area that have these amps. Maybe not big name guys, but certainly someone has one near you. Check around. I'll bet someone will let you demo one of these. Maybe you can exchange a little session time for quality time with this amp.

Re: New toy inbound...

650? Add another buck fifty and you've got yourself a hand-wired piece of 5E3 goodness. :)

If this amp doesn't live up to my expectations, that's precisely what I'll do. I'll flip this amp and get me a celtic 5E3. What kind of enclosure does it come with stock?

Re: New toy inbound...

She's due in tomorrow. I'm beside myself with anticipation. I'll have to pack up the Edwards and take it to work to check her out properly. I guess I'll also have to get a cord or two as well...

Re: New toy inbound...

Best of luck Scott...I hear those are killer little amps. There was actually one here locally not too long ago but the guys wanted over G for it because it was a "Vintage Marshall" Let us know what you think of it once you get it.

Re: New toy inbound...

Sure will. The guys over at that 18 watt forum are killing me with their reports about this amp. They say it isn't very good. Kinda hurts me deep in my soul to hear that now, but I'll let my own ears be the judge. If this isn't all that good, I'll sell it and plop down some cash on something else. Maybe something from Scott_F or maybe another Marshall.
