For most of those sounds, any Rectifier will get you there. Metallica's AJFA is a little different, it's more fluid and it's a got a tighter feel. MET used Mark IIC+s on that one.

I don't think the F series will get you there...the Mark IV might do you some justice (pun!) on AJFA, but the Rectifiers are definetely the sound you're looking for...that saggy, authorative roar.

Thank you. I thought my question might get passed over and I do appreciate it!

You "trade" your 5150 for a rectumfrier ... hm i don't uderstand...
hope you like the recti

5150 = cleans blow.
Recto = more brutal, powerful, defined, articulate 5150. :13:

you like it more than the 5150??

Much! Just had the first band practice with it today, and it made the whole band sound tighter and cleaner.

What was the total elapsed time on all that? How long did it take to go from Squier to Satan?

4 years for all of it, started with the Squier/Squier setup.

Sweet deal DSS. Welcome to the Mesa family, I'm new to it too. Rocks, doesn't it? lol.

Although I thought you had some sick tones with that Peavy 5150. Are you still applying the Maxon OD to the Mesa the same wayyou were to the Peavy? I was actually thinking about trying out the same thing with my Mark III on the lead channel. You gotta get clips up soon bro!

Hell yes, it rocks! I can't wait to get a matching cabinet and a Mark IV!

I did like my tones with the 5150, but they started to bore me. Everyone and they're mother in this genre plays that amp! It just got really bland and trite. Same exact settings on the Maxon, it tightens it up more than it tightened up the 5150.

btw, other than money, there is one reason of buying the single recto instead of the dual recto?

Lighter, cheaper to retube, etc.

That said, I might eventually go to a Dual for the increased headroom.

I've been struggling with a Dual Rec 2x12 combo that I keep in my office, trying to get a tone out of it that is closer to my likings. I ended up going with the SS rectifier instead of the valve ones, swapping out the 6L6s for EL34s, as well as swapping out the 12AX7s for 12AT7s. (Except for the phase inverters, which have to remain as 12AX7s) After pumping the mids and running it on the Red Channel, it's much closer to the old school sound I prefer. The 12AT7s have much less gain, so I just throw the HBE Big D in front of it. It's a pretty good rig for after-hours jamming.

Well first, what speakers are in it? I much prefer V30's to C90's. I also prefer the 6L6's in this amp, but we're going for a bit different style of mids here ;). I'd use the SS rectifier, keep it on the bold setting, and use the Vintage mode for your style.

I really like the efx rack set up, I could imagine setting up the midi was
a pain
(do you also have it set up for channel switching and for the stomp boxes?)

The midi was the easiest part of it, I'd say. I spent more time soldering the cables to hook up the channel switching and OD switching than I did programming the midi board.

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

Congrats man, lookin good.......now, about those clips...
It's good to see someone your age spending their money sensibly rather than on booze and reefer like I did at 15.

Cool rig. wish I had it at 15. I had a my stock squier and a Gx15 then. I could have had 3 of your rigs but had to go and spend it on stupid college books.

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

DSS, how do you like that cab? Are you planning on replacing it? I need a 2x12 sealed cab to match up with my Road King for the distortion channels. What do you want to end up pairing your recto with?

I do like the cabinet, but I need to switch the v12's on the bottom for G12T-75 (Jeff_H :fingersx: ), and see from there.

However, my next big purchase will definately be a matching traditional sized 4x12.

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

Jesus... I thought I preferred the 6L6's..

This thing sounds ****ing amazing with 6L6's, and even better with EL34's.

I'm REALLY curious how a Dual would sound with EL34's... I'm generally an EL34 guy as it is... DAMN TAX RETURNS MAKING ME WAIT 2 WEEKS!!

I need to stay out of this thread before I end up buying a dual recto before I have enough money to afford gas :smack:

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

I had EL34s in my Dual Recto and wasn't that thrilled. Definitely like the 6L6s. that said DSD i'd go for the overside standard 4x12 mesa cab. it sounds awesome. It's what i use. Dualie and a 4x12 standard oversize

Think of the standard Recto with a smoother tone and tighter overall sound.

I actually don't like the oversized cabinets at all. They sound muddy and dark to me... but the traditionals are tight and defined as hell.

Alright my young brother! It sounds like you got your all bases covered now it`s up to you and your bandmates to change the music world when your in your early 20s , you`ve got plenty of time. I know you guys are metal so I`d be happy with a Metallica/Sabbath/Priest/early GnR/Motorhead/AIC type band. All jokes aside(if you think I`m joking) I think it`s very cool that at a young age you`ve some killer gear and what appears to be good head on youe shoulders.

glad to see that you're digging the new amp!

think of the traditional recto sound with a tighter bottom end, and a more complex midrange that has that crunch that's associated with marshalls, but still maintains that mesa tone, if that makes any sense at all. definitely something that's worth trying out.

I was using the amp for the most part, I wore down the tubes, went what the heck, I dig el34's, why not try them? And they do sound killer in there.

that's pretty much how it happened for me too. i was about ready to retube, and thought why not try out the EL34's? and i haven't gone back to 6L6 since!

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

That looks like an amp that sounds sweet (and brutal) as all Hell!
Have fun and enjoy it .

P.S. Don't go deaf with that thing!

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

don't put EL34's in a rectifier.. jus buy a stiletto duece and a traditional cab.. btw it looks like you've gone through the same stuff as me (only 4 years earlier).. I agree that the traditional cabs are more articulate, especially the straight front.. btw if you DID switch to a 3 channel rectifier.. would your G-major still do channel switching?.. I'm limited to 2 channel rectifiers cuz I use a Boss GT-8 for channel switching

Purely personal preference... :smokin:

And I happen to prefer the Rec's with ELs over the tone of the Stilettos, which while sounding good sometimes, are very sensitive to tube types and their treble frequencies can be overbearing and brittle at times.

Re: New Toy = Obligatory Pics

Congrats man!

I've got my Dual Rec going through a Marshall 1960A cab (G12T75s) and I couldn't be happier. Those speakers give a real nice crunch and cut through much better than any Mesa cab I've played through.

Exactly, although I have switched back to 6L6's. Not as brittle as the EL34's, and a thicker lead tone, IMO.

I've put a black shadow/v30 x pattern in my cabinet now, sounds 10x better!

Yes, the G-Major can be wired up to switch between 3 channels, but I'm selling it now, as I never use it.

And finally, Stiletto's sound like ****... no way around it. Worst amp Mesa has ever made.
