Still working on fixing/adding things here and there but it's the general idea. Drums are a little hot in this mix - trying to get used to my new headphones :smack:

No vocals as usual.

Oh yeah - this is straight into my Marshall 2204 except for the clean which I did through the 2101

Re: New tune

It sounds fantastic. I have to say certain parts of the rythm are too busy - some places its the bass, others its the drums, they're doing too much.
But overall it sounds really fantastic, great tone on both the clean and heavy parts. In places it reminds me of Opeth, although with busier drums! ;)

Re: New tune

Real nice. I felt that the chorused guitar was a little to busy - gets a little monotonous after a while. But the tones are nice and the playing very accomplished. Good work!

Thanks - Yeah I need to shorten it up a bit and jettison some of the clean guitar to relieve the monotony... I really think it terms of vocals but since I never have anyone to sing, I just need to start thinking guitar tunes and get rid of the vocal space.

I appreciate the critiques. Keep 'em coming

Re: New tune

Man, I dig it immensely . I listen to alot of prog rock and metal and I didnt find anything busy about it...especially if there are intended lyrics over that chorused clean part. If it was too open and airy then it wouldnt have meshed with the tempo and rest of the song
Good Stuff!

Re: New tune

The few things I have heard from you have been really good, so my take is gonna be offered with much respect.

I think you can go further musically on this tune than you did to this point. There is an organic, breathing element that you scratch on, but don't embrace, as far as production goes. I love it when musicians suprise me, ( I don't mean in an Ornette Coleman way... traditional structure is fine) this track kinda goes exactly how I thought it would, so there was a bit of a let down in that regard. I would love to hear it more open, and more natural. The distorted guitar kinda hits me in a late 80s Shrapnel way, bright and and a bit boxed in. The leads are wonderfully competent, perfectly phrased, but don't strike me as memorable, or passioned in any way.

It is very solid as is, but for me there was no moment that was a WOW kinda thing. Nothing on it sucks, but clearly you are accomplished with both your ears and your hands, I want to hear that pushed a bit further.....

WOW
- Now that's the kind of feedback I love! I appreciate that and I understand and know what you're saying and believe me... I'm trying to get myself out of that box - it was a LOT easier to push the envelope when I was playing with other musicians all the time but it's a new challenge now that I'm doing all this stuff with no outside input (no time to go play with others any more). It also doesn't help that I took about a 7 year hiatus between 98 and 05 where I didn't even pick up a guitar but once every six months due to work and family. So the past couple of years have been getting myself set back up and back into playing and back to hashing through obtaining a guitar tone that inspires me - it was truly pitiful a few years ago when I blew the dust off everything... I think I'm still burning through a lot of the ideas I had when I stopped playing - which are dated.

With that said, I hope I'll have something a bit further outside the box soon - I'm tryin'. :)

Re: New tune

That sounds great. The only thing I'd like is if the drums and bass met the guitar on the hits of the heavy rhythm parts. Or alternate between hitting together and playing steady.

Sounds great anyway.

You know I had a similiar path, I stopped playing for a couple years, just tired of chasing whatever expectations that I had, and then the bug came back a bit, Much of that due to this forum (getting on many years ago now). The best thing I ever did was dump my drum machine, and start tracking with a live drummer, no clicks, just me nodding changes. The tension of that, always being on the edge of disaster really re-opened my noodle. It has been really fun 're-learning' how to play. I play now, like the way I wanted to play as a 14 yr old so many years ago ( it also means I am technically much simpler as a player these days). Been a really fun journey....

That's good to know - right now I have to find a way to do this with the clicks since a live drummer isn't in the cards. It's a bummer but i'm not gonna let it drag me down.
