New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

I am having some issues with the Vintage Kluson style Gibson Deluxe tuners on my Gibson LP Studio Faded, and I am wanting to upgrade them to something else. I've been looking at a few different sets, but I'm not sure on which ones to get. I want something that I am not going to have to drill the tuner post holes out bigger on the headstock. And I figured I would probably just get some locking tuners while I am at it. Any suggestions?

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

have you changed the nut? Even the best tuners in the world need a good nut. Gibson install plastic nuts on all their guitars (except the custom shop ones). 20 dollars will get you a pre-cut self lubricating tusq nut which is cut to size for your gibson. All you need to do is sand the back until you are happy with the height. Swapping nuts is a pretty simple job and will increase your speed of tuning and tuning stability immensely. Try that before springing for new tuners. If you are not confident in doing it yourself, then get a tech to install one.
ON the locking tuner front: they dont increase tuning stability, they just make string changing faster because you dont need to wrap them round the posts very much. I have sperzels on my strat.
If you have replaced the nut and you still feel the need for new tuners, then have a look at grover rotomatics. Nice and chunky all metal affairs that will still maintian the gibson vibe. The rounded corners on the tuning keys are really comfy when restringing too.

My 2001 LP came stock with (non-lcoking) Grovers. I really like 'em, they look nice and stay in tune for days on end. Are the tuners you've got on now mounted with single or double screws?

Yeah, I've actually already had it checked out by a tech. He said the nut was just fine and that it actually already had a bone nut installed on it (maybe by the previous owner?). So I think the issue is the tuners, and it is mainly the 3rd string. All of the strings are having tuning issues, but the 3rd is the worst. Will the Grovers drop in without having to drill the holes out? I love Grovers, but I wasn't sure if they would fit...

They are the stock Kluson style Gibson Deluxe tuners and they are mounted with double screws.

The "G" string is notorious for tuning problems.

I like the Planet Waves locking tuner which also automatically cuts your strings too. But Grovers are also very good.

Are they really the old-style stamped Klusons, or are they the cast Gibson Deluxes (which have a totally different type of housing, and only look like old tuners because of the keystone buttons).

Kluson style (stamped, with more slender housing and rounded over edges):

Newer style (cast, bulkier housing with squared off edges):

Both types are stamped "Gibson Deluxe," so you have to look at the housings to determine which kind you have.

The latter style are indeed crap IME. I've never had a set that doesn't slip way too much, and I've broken several of them with very minor accidents. Others yet have had the housings and gears develop lots of looseness and play. That's interesting, because they are a newer design, which I would expect to be an improvement on the old-style Kluson design.

The one good thing about them is that most aftermarket tuners will drop right into their peghead holes.

I dont know for sure about your lester, cos the grovers came stock on my 335, but i have the same GIbson deluxe tuners as you on my 175. Both headstocks look to be the same size and shape and the barrels of the tuners look pretty much the same.
HOwever i found this on the stewmac website under grover rotomatic tuners reviews:

Excellent upgrade

Recently, I bought a new Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe. It came stock with the Grover keys, but were the 14:1 ratio. Quickly found out that it had a tuning problem. Went to the 18:1 ratio, and was an instant difference. Could go through a whole set with minimum tweaking.

I highly recommend these, and I consider them an upgrade to my instrument. Plus it was a direct replacement on this Les Paul.

Stew-Mac was my only choice to get these, as they always have extremely fast shipping, and a fair price, too. Thanks for the great support!

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

Sperzel has an E-Z Mount set that as long as the post holes are wide enough, they're plug-n-play. There are also tuners that are old-school Kluson style tuners that should be plug-n-play. Grover makes 'em I think.

I personally like Sperzels. They seem to hold tune the best for me. Schallers are also good. I know you don't want to change the tuning peg holes, but if it were me, I'd be ok. Still, your guitar, and there are options.

There are two types of plastic keystone tuners that Gibson uses, and both are stamped "GIBSON DELUXE." One type has a stamped housing, looks more like old Klusons, and uses press-fit bushings on the front of the peghead. The other looks like Grover Deluxe or Schaller Deluxe tuners, with the squared off, cast housing. They have screw in bushings.

In other words, at this point we still don't know which tuners are on the OP's guitar. I am pretty sure the Faded line and other lower trim level guitars usually have the cast variety with the screw-in bushings, but I really don't know for sure. I do know that my Faded SG, my LP Jr., and my LP Melody Maker all have the cast type, while my LP Standard has the stamped type. I've had problems with all four sets of the cast Gibson Deluxes that I own, and not a problem with the stamped ones on my Standard.

I know the latter style uses the same size holes as many aftermarket tuners. Grovers are a drop in fit for sure. I've never had to replace the former type, so I don't know if the holes are the same size. The shafts on those tuners are fatter than original Klusons, so it's possible that they use a larger hole diameter than 1/4 inch as well.

The tuners on my LP are the "newer" Gibson Deluxe Tuners with the screw in bushings. If they actually do use a larger peghead holes, than the older style, that would be awesome if Grovers would drop right in.

You can also put old style tuners in if you get press-in conversion bushings. That will allow you to use Gotoh Mag Lockers without losing the the "vintage" look or leaving any holes visible on your headstock. They are also much lighter than Grovers. Sperzels are lighter still, and can be installed without the locating pin if you don't want to drill the head.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info! I don't really care if the guitar has "vintage" looking tuners, I just want something that I know will be reliable and stay in tune. Lol

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

In that case, I vote for Sperzels, due to the locking feature and the low weight. Retailers don't carry much variety in terms of Sperzels; you need to order directly from the maker to get the exact finish and buttons you want. They come in chrome plate, satin chrome, and nickel plate (as well as a bunch of other colors), so be sure to specify which of those three you want. Nickel is slightly warmer in hue than chrome, and tarnishes differently over time. You can also choose from four different types of buttons. The holes required are 25/64 inch, which are basically 10mm, so there should be no boring required.

O yeah...Grovers are excellent. My cheap LP copies came with them too. They are very stable.

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

I think I might go ahead and buy some Sperzels, but I'm still thinking about Grovers. If I go with Grovers, is there any certain ones they I need to make sure and get or stay away from? I know they have a few different gear ratios and whatnot...

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

Had the same issue w my lp. Colored the nut slots in with a pencil. Stays in tune, never changed the tuners.

A lot of folks have had good experiences with Grovers... I'm absolutely not one of those people. I have 3 guitars that came with Grovers and 2 have been replaced w/Sperzels. The third is gonna get swapped out in the next 6 months for Sperzels too. This is a situation where honestly, YMMV. I yanked them off my Epi LP and off my Gibson Explorer because they couldn't seem to stay in tune. But that's only my experience.

For me it's Sperzels or Schallers. Anything else gets replaced. Again YMMV:drive:, but this is my personal experience.

I've already been doing that but it is still having issues. I am going to put new tuners on it and a Tusq nut too, while I am at it.

Maybe I'll just get the Sperzels then.

Re: New Tuners For My LP: Which Ones?

Tone Pros Klusons, can't beat 'em. They even make a locking version if you must but that seems silly on an LP.

I keep waiting for my Gibby Deluxe press on tuners to fail but they have been solid since day one ('05) . My Jr has the bolt bushing versions and they've been fine too.
