:) New Warmoth Day Woohoo!!

It arrived on Thursday and I spent most of the day doing the frets. Rounding the fret ends then leveling then sanding and cleaning it up. I did most of the assembly on Saturday after work. Now I did some fine tuning and it's all done! I built it to be a rock ax.

Pickups: The middle is a JB Jr neck. The bridge is a double thick A8 double screw Distortion/Custom hybrid with the Distortion coil nearest the bridge. This pup came out way better than I was expecting. It has great attack and aggression but has a sweetness that I wasn't expecting. And it still has an overall classic vibe to it that I love.

Neck: Maple (duh) unfinished fatback with 6100 stainless frets, 1 11/16" tusq nut, 11" radius. I really like the 11" radius. It feels a little flat for fast playing and easy strumming but still has a nice contour to it.

Body: Swamp Ash unfinished hardtail. 1st time trying swamp ash and I love it! It's warmer than I thought but amazing detail.

Controls: 3 way mini toggle for the pickup selector. 1 meg linear volume pot with a 220 pf treble bleed.

Were the fret ends still sharp? Or did you just want them more to a personal feel?

Thx! The audio is working for me. I played my 1st Warmoth neck for months with only a level. Then saw Ayrton's round ends and although I wasn't getting cut, I was getting marks on my hands. So I'm into the extra work for round ends now.

Is there a link to a thread or a video about Ayrton's round fret ends? I just saw Clint's post about it and remembered Ayrton mentioned it yesterday briefly when I talked to him on the phone. I'd like to know about the technique as I just bought a small fret file to work on a few sharp ends and some frets that I'd just like to be smoother.

This is the tool that works best for me, a quarter round file. Tape off your frets or do it fast without tape then come back and clean up your marks with sanding. Rough out the ends with the tool, then stick sandpaper in the file and further round it and take out the scratches. 320, 800, 1500 works great for me. If you want to know the whole procedure for leveling, let me know.

I bought almost the exact same thing from Stew Mac, just the handle is different. Thanks Clint!

Did Ayrton post a video or something showing the technique he uses, or is there a good You Tube video Clint? I think I understand the concept.... you just run the file parallel to the fret and then roll over the top edge when you get to the end of the fret. I'd just like to be sure that I'm doing it correctly. The sandpaper is a nice tip, and I'll use that for sure.

This guy's method is spot on for levels. The only 2 things which aren't entirely correct is when he goes to sand the frets by hand with 320 is unnecessary, just stick the sandpaper in your half round crowning file. Also when he puts the fallaway in he says only 20 thousandths of an inch is needed or something- not entirely accurate. You could need a lot more just depending how much of a ramp there is above fret 12 where the truss rod is ineffective. Put enough in to make it level or slightly downward. Another thing which he doesn't mention is after you level with the radius block, mark the frets with a sharpie before you crown them. This way you can see the part of the fret that needs crowning most and avoid the part that doesn't need it and not potentially lower the fret from where it has been leveled.

That's an interesting pickup configuration. why did you put the JB Jr in the middle if I may ask?

Thx! I put it in the middle because middle position is a more suitable rock rhythm sound for me than neck because it's tighter and less bassy.
