New warmoth strat project, help me pick a finish

okay dudes, keeping the details to a mininum:

Strat, rosewood neck, ebony fretboard, abalone dot inlays, 1-piece mahogany body, hardtail.

Finish: Red dyed (like Gibson's heritage cherry), Gold top Gold, or warmoth's blue burst. In the case of the blue burst it would be flamed maple on mahogany which adds significantly to the price in conjunction with the finish, but it sure is pretty.

Tell me what you think. I'm leaning toward gold top gold. I think it would set off the dark rosewood/ebony neck nicely.

if you go gold top do no pickguard, chrome hardware, creme rings and chrome covered pickups! make it like a stat/paul thing lol. oh and skip the inlays, that's what side dots are for lol.

^I agree with xssive on the details about the goldtop if you go with that, but I always like the look of mahagony dyed a dark color. Maybe not quite as dark as heritage cherry though - something a little brighter?

interesting, I may have to look into that. Btw, I love your guitars. Just way outta my price range for the time being.

Blue and/or green dyed mahagony both rock! One of the big advantages of using non-honduran mahagony is that it takes just about any color well. Ibanez made an RG a while back (one of the 500's) that was mahagony with a dark blue dye that looks absolutely incredible.

You mean you're not going with white?!? :laugh2:

I'd definitely look into just dying the mahogany a cooler color like blue or green. That would REALLY make the abalone dots pop against the dark ebony board.

i' think the above is correct - the blue dye would bring out the abalone inlays which would go great with the dark ebony fingerboard

I don't know about the gold. In my book, goldtops need to have gold TOPS, meaning they're square-edged, bound, with plain mahogany backs. Methinks that square edge would be uncomfortable on a Strat,

i'd go blue with the flame. I love the way blue comes out on flame.

Methinks that square edge would be uncomfortable on a Strat,

a flat top strat is actually more comfortable that a tele since it's thinner. my 1982 USA made Schecter strat is a flat top with a bound body and it's great!

ok how bout this,

this is what i did with a one piece Honduras Mahogany that i got from USACG ( i think they do better wood work than Warmoth, plus Honduras Mahogany is better tone wise) .

why dont you leave the body in an oil/wax finish?
it is beautiful and resonates really really well. Wayne guitars swears by their Monster series that is like this.
