NFBD (New Finished Bass Day)

It's actually been finished for a couple months but I finally got around to making a thread about it.

MIM Fender Jazz Bass body, Warmoth Bloodwood neck with Tele headstock, EMG Mexican J Bass pickups. The hardware is all original to the body. I got the body for $20 from my high school band teacher. The neck was completely destroyed and unusable along with the pickups, but the bridge, machine heads, and the rest were still in good shape. I got a new pickguard on there and she plays like a dream. The neck's unfinished and feels amazing. I may refinish it over the summer. I liked it at first, but I'm not really digging the cream anymore. I'm thinking about going with black to make the red pinstripe on the pickguard pop out a bit more.

Unfortunately, the photos I took with my phone are too large, so I've linked to my Photobucket so you can see them here.

Re: NFBD (New Finished Bass Day)

Would it not be simpler to leave the body painted white and find a pickguard of roughly the same colour as the neck wood?

IMO, the thumb rest positioned between the pickup ends is;
1) Superfluous.
2) Unsightly.
3) A verboten adjective that young people use. (The opposite of awesome.)

Real Jazz Bass players rest their thumbs on the ends of the pickup housings.

I've never really been a fan of that cream color anyways. I bought the pickguard with the intention of repainting at some point.

As for the thumb rest, yeah it looks like hell, but it's really comfortable to play on. I got used to playing five string basses and using the low B as a thumb rest, so that rest was positioned in roughly the same spot as the 5th string would be. i've tried J basses in the past and never really liked resting my thumb on the pickups. It always seemed either too close to the bridge or too far away for my tone.

Looks really nice and I'd leave the cream. Not a fan of the thumb rest though.

Re: NFBD (New Finished Bass Day)

You don't need another person telling you they like the cream, so I'll just say I think your bass looks great! I'll add that pick guards are (obviously) less expensive and less hassle than paint jobs, and if I owned a bass exactly like yours I'd throw a Tortoise guard on it and thump it until the turtles come home.

I'm not a fan of the way tortoise shell looks. I prefer solid colors. I may check out warmoth again and see if there's anything else I like. Or I may just got with no pickguard too.
