NG Splawn + Strat- you gotta hear it

I had a great PRS CE-24 for many years, but just disn't play it any more- so I put it on Craigs list and a guy offered up a Splawn Street Rod- I turned it down because I think of Splawn as metal and I'm a rock/blues guy-

So he comes back, sweetens the deal with a MIM strat and that made all the difference- I imagined the value was high enough that a trade made sense and I could sell them easier than the PRS-

I first tried out the Splawn with my HSS Parker ( JB, cruiser and Cool rail in the neck)- I could dial in some bluesy stuff, but I wasn't convinced yet-

However, when he pulled out the 99 MIM, everything changed- The clean channel sparkles, gear 1 gives me great blues/ early stones and gear 2 is Blue Oyster Cult to ACDC. My guess is the strat's lower output pups brought the gain back into my comfort zone- can't wait to try it out with the rest of my lower powered guitars. Got a feeling I'll be holding onto it a while and guessing that I might start taking a tube amp out again.

I guess the moral to the story is I had to hear it to get the point that a Splawn doesn't have to be high gain- I'll record something later this week and post here.

And thanks for input on the thread where I started the research-

Re: NG Splawn + Strat- you gotta hear it

I saw your other thread, asking about the trade. Glad you went for it, and I'm looking forward to hearing the clips.

Sweet lookin Strat, too.

Re: NG Splawn + Strat- you gotta hear it

Yeah the Strats really unexpected on all counts- It definitely showed me the side of the Splawn that I needed to see and haven't been able to set it down since it came home- But tomorrow it's gotta compete with my Zion Strat- Will be very interesting to see how well it holds its own- had really intended to sell it asap, but...:)

As promised, here's a bit of messing around on the new street rod-

Rather sloppy, but I think it makes the case for the street rod for blues and rock.

1. Direct into an AT 3035 at 2 feet, so it's a bit more crunched and compressed than it sounds in the room

2. Foot switching from clean channel to overdrive gear 2 and then overdrive gear 3

3. Overdrive 2 always on

4. Stock 99 MIM strat in 2nd and 5th positions except 'Limelight' in position 1

So happy to read it worked out. That Splawn model is a love hate affair it seems with most.

There is a learning curve to them. They are picky amps. Now that I’ve had mine a while I can get it to do exactly what I want.
But yes, there was a time I had my doubts.
I have the Quickrod....different model amp but...

Aren't you glad that you didn't listen to that one dude who told you that it was just a metal amp?
Oh, and thanks for the case of G.A.S.

Yeah, it's quite contagious;-)

Still surprised at the relatively small number of rock blues demos... I still haven't figured out how to get my sounds from thicker guitars, however, it's been downright easy with single coils.

Glad you did it and are happy!!! I think it is because many who buy Splawns are wanting that hotrod Marshall tone.. But they can also play nice.. People have used Marshalls and other amps for blues, rock , pop and other genres, so Splawns can do that too. I like mine at full tilt most of the time, but when I play my Tokai with p90s, I can dial down and get an awesome punk crunch or can easily hit AC/DC type tones. And even a sweet clean.

They like true bypass pedals

They are somewhat picky about the speakers they like

Those are the two biggies. There are other things that don’t really fall under the “picky” umbrella...

They seem to be more sensitive to tube swaps (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing)

In order to get them to sound their absolute best, you have to dial in the bias just right (on the cool side)

Just my personal observations. Read through some posts on the Splawn forum. You’ll get a better idea.

Congrats on the cool trade! It is nice to hear your riffing. I feel like every time I hear a Splawn demo it is metal or Van Halen. You have some great tones going on with the Splawn and that Strat.

Thanks Cole! And yeah, there's a natural affinity with that Strat and the Splawn... Has completely shifted the brand in my mind.

As far as tone goes, got some recording in last weekend and the Splawn really likes a dynamic on the grill.
Cheers,
Michael
