NGD! A trade has been done..........

Hi guys.

A bit of history before I get to pics:

I've owned a 1997 PRS Custom 22 for several years now and for some reason I never really bonded with it.

When I picked it up cheap, cheap for a USA PRS atleast, it had a ding in the top, awful nasty locking tuners as the originals had broken and all the electrics on it were shot too. So I gutted it all and started again, along with replacing the pickups with BKP Abraxas and I also changed the machineheads for a nicer set of locking Grovers. It always played very well but it never really 'grabbed' me, so it sat in it's case being unplayed for most of it's time with me.

I came across a pair of random mis-matched pickups (a BKP and a Bulldog)and tried those in the PRS and it instantly improved the sound for me, there was always that thing of my never really gelling with it though.

I tried selling it and offered it for trade many times, every time it was shot down and refused as the pickups and machine heads were wrong. I even offered to re-replace the pickups and machine heads to the correct PRS stuff only to be told no because of extra screw holes on the back of the headstock. So I'd pretty much decided I was stuck with it as there was no way I was accepting an Indonnesian LTD in trade for it, which I had been offered atleast once. A mate of mine bought a 10 top CU22 for £900 so things were looking bleak for the value of mine until I saw a thread offering up the below for trade as the last owner was scared to play it for fear of dinging it and wanted something he could play without worrying about it.

I contacted him, offered the PRS and explained it's changes. He was interested so a deal was done:

From what I can tell it's a late 90s/Early 2000s USA Peavey Wolfgang Standard Deluxe Archtop. I have 2 USA Wolfie Specials as well so I knew I'd get on with the neck profile etc before we agreed to trade.

Value wise these are very hit and miss, as was my PRS in all honesty, so some may see this as quite a trade down for me but all I'm concerned with is that I now have a guitar I'll actually play instead of 1 that just sits in it's case all the time :1:

Nice!
Always better to have something that will see some action!

Seems like you both ended up OK!
(although I'm not a PRS guy)
:O

Re: NGD! A trade has been done..........

I've always liked the Custom 22/24 the least out of all the PRS designs, mostly because of the thinner body.
Ted McCarty made a lot of improvements to Paul R. Smith's company.

Trading was a good move. At least both parties get what they want with no money out of pocket.

Re: NGD! A trade has been done..........

I think I would take this guitar over a C22, and I am a PRS fan. Great score!

Re: NGD! A trade has been done..........

Congrats on the trade! I don't see it as a trade down, I've never been able to gel with a PRS personally. Also, if you are happy and enjoy playing the Wolfgang then I'd say it was an overall win! Enjoy!

Re: NGD! A trade has been done..........

Not familiar with the PRS you traded but the Peavey sure looks sweet. Congrats on getting one you'll play! Enjoy it.

Re: NGD! A trade has been done..........

I would do moderately questionable things for more Peavey Wolfgangs.

Cheers guys. VERY happy with it so far :D

I've played it more this week than I have the PRS in the last few months so that tells me something there.

I have 2 gigs this weekend and seeing as coincidently it's setup in Eb with 11s like my other guitars for this band, it'd be mean to not take it along wouldn't it!

Oh hell yes! My Wolfgang's brotha from anotha motha! lol

Ok, these pics are for you guys :D

The black 1 is in Eb and I swapped the pickups, which turned out to be a set of cheapie Chinese things, out for a pair of Dimarzio Evolutions. This 1 has the thickest neck.

The white 1 is in Standard tuning and, as far as I know, is stock. I am thinking about putting a spare Dimarzio Super Distortion I have lying around in it though. This 1 has the thinnest neck.

The Amber Flametop is also, as far as I know, stock. The neck on this 1 is inbetween the other 2 but is a lovely piece of Birdseye maple.

Nice trio!! didnt like the EVH pups?? I had a buddy that bought one of the inexpensive flat top wolfgangs back at the start with PV. I thought the pups in that one sounded great.. easy brown tone.. Granted, I havent tried the new EVH pups, but I would assume they are as good or better..?? Jus wonderin.. But, I know, diff strokes....

They're much smoother and fatter than the PV's. They have AII mags and a different wind......but basically still in the general ballpark of the EBMM and PV tones

I only swapped the 1s in the black Wolfie as it never sounded as good as the white 1 and I was getting rid of my Ibanez with the Evos in so thought I'd give them a try.

It looks like whoever had it before took the pickups out and put some cheapie things in too!

I wonder how bad it would get if it held a pair of custom orange Duncans...
