NGD and a big surprise.

So after some negotiation I got my first ever Epi Flying V.

It's a 2005 Daewon and it could just be the first Chinese Epi I'll be keeping. The rosewood on the board is lovely, the frets are perfect and rock hard! However it's far from standard:

BKP CTS 550K Pots
Switchcraft Switch
Jensen PIO Tone Cap (it's HUGE)
Gibson ABR-1 fitted using custom made bushes
Calibrated Bareknuckle Nailbomb pickups (Ceramic bridge)
Sperzel Tone Lok Tuners
Graphtech Tusq XL nut

I'm calling it the black beast because it just blows me away! The pickups are monstrous yet articulate and the neck is like a frickin tree trunk. Never played a Daewon epi before but the fit and finish is spectacular and it resonates for days.

I took it to practice thinking it would sound rpetty cool, I was totally unprepared for just how great it sounded. Even when we tried it on my Lead guitarists (kinda crappy) rig it blew everyone away. Truly fantastic guitar.

Another upgraded Epi that smokes WTG ! Congrats on the new ax , still miss my 60s Gibson 20 some years later. Looks like that would actually fit that spot , I want one of those fancy custom Gibson V's with ebony board and block inlays. Stop me from drooling all over your new guitar sorry. Waiting for one mysef went out for delivery at 5:45 am. How much did that thing set you back with all that fancy upgraded hardware ?

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

I've owne a lot of Epis and Ibuild and sell custom harnesses (Always using Bareknuckles pots, Switchcraft sweitches and jacks, orange drops etc...), so I've had some amazing guitars from the Epi line. (I've just completed my Randy tribute) I've always avoided Bareknuckle pickups because of the price, and I love Duncans.

I wonder if there's a SD that is voiced like the Nailbomb? I could save myself a fortune on my new tone addiiction.

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

Pretty cool - like the fact that it's got a '58 style body, and an ABR-1/fairly low neck angle so the bridge pu isn't maxed out in height, like on so many Gibsons I've seen.

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

Congratulations! The upgrades described sound like they would bring it up to fine standard as a keeper/daily player. Nice score. Between you and 80s_Metal I'm gassing for a V. There's one in the Trading Post, but I'm not sure I can put the money down right now.

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

Thats awesome! Id love to score one of the EPI Vs like that, that look like the gibson one. Most of the epis in recent years have been the goth ones and such. plus, yours has killer mods that should make it perfectly giggable! cONGRATS

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

looks goooood!

great set of upgrades too. Congrats!

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

I had a gibson V, the bridge pickup had to be cranked way the heck up to the point that most of it was out.

Re: NGD and a big surprise.

There's a formula for making a good guitar, and when they follow it, it doesn't matter what brand it is.

Extremely well made Epiphones with the right parts quite often equals a Gibson. It usually means their best workers, plus good wood, and then high quality hardware. It helps when they lean into Gibson specs like neck carve especially.
