I had it for a day then took it apart for repainting yellow. :D

I REALLY like the neck on it - the frets are nowhere near as big as my other Jacksons though (SL3, RR5 etc), but it's a pretty slim neck, feels more like the neck on my JDR-94 than anything else.

The tuners feel like they're not as good quality as the ones on MIJ Jacksons, they are also unbranded. They do the job and aren't horrible, just a noticeable step down from my Jacksons.

The Charvel logo is pretty fancy, fake MoP or whatever, I don't know, it looks pretty nice though.

Sound-wise, acoustically its great, really rings out nice and loud.
Then I plugged in and played it into my Line 6 Gearbox on the PC and it sounded really fantastic playing stuff like Iron Maiden. However, I tried it into my amp (AVT150) and the cheapo pickup showed its limitations. No real balls, although it's better than the stock pups that came in the JDR-94. It makes no difference, I've got a Duncan Distortion on the way to go straight in it anyway, and I'm sure anyone buying one of these is probably aware the electronics aren't going to be the best.
Similarly, the volume control has a really poor taper - it's pretty much "on" or "off", no real taper to speak of. Again, I have a CTS 500K audio taper pot to put in (I did have to enlarge the hole for that, but everyone knows this stuff by now right?)
The FR Special I can't say much about as I never got much chance to use it - it LOOKS nice, and felt about as nice as the JT580s I have/have had in the past. I don't abuse the trem much anyway, I have no problem keeping the FR Special in place, I'm sure it'll be fine.
I noticed the guitar felt a bit neck heavy on the strap so I filled in both strap button holes prior to painting. I'll probably just move the one at the neck end onto the neck mounting plate.

I took off the plain black truss rod cover and put on one of my three ply Jackson ones, which I will get engraved with my daughter's name (my RR5 has my 4 year old daughter's name, and my SL3 has my wife's on the truss cover).

One minor annoyance is the jack placement - when you play the guitar sitting down, the input jack is pressed against your leg, it's irritiating as unplugged it fits between your legs (!) perfectly. It would have been better for that jack to have been placed on the upper horn, as it is on the Rhoads.

I bought some of those fretboard inlay stickers to try - brown rosewood dots, to cover the MOTO ones, you can see the result in the bottom photo of the neck, they look ok from a distance. I gave the fretboard a going over with some linseed oil as well before I applied those, so everything should be great once I get it all together!

Here's some poor quality pics, I'll get better ones done once I have it all finished (hopefully one more coat of yellow, then start the clear coating tomorrow, should be all done by Monday or Tuesday!)

BTW, I REALLY love this guitar. It plays, sounds, feels and looks great for the money! I got it specifically to help me through a very hard time just now, and I'm sure it will always help me remember this bad time in a better way.

Awesome, man! Awesome awesome awesome.

Those inlay stickers are cool though. In some pics it looks like they aren't even there.

How does it play? You're the first I've seen get one of those. I might be getting one late summer.

Re: NGD and refinish etc - Charvel DST-3 Star

I like that yellow on it. Nice job on the refinish.

Do they make that in a fixed bridge? I'd be all over one if they did.

Re: NGD and refinish etc - Charvel DST-3 Star

The inlay stickers are cool - I don't understand why they come glossy though, it reflects the light (obviously) so shows them up sometimes. Still, for 6 bucks or whatever they cost, it was worth it.

I gotta say it plays really great. Really. I've just sat for a bit with it playing along to whatever I have in my library tuned to Eb, so from Deicide, to WASP, Motorhead, Ugly Kid Joe, with me ad-libing over it all, and it was really good FUN.
It's a comfy guitar to play!

I don't really like the upper fret access, but if I need to be able to hit the 24th fret easily I'll be playing the SL3 anyway. That is honestly the only problem I could have with this guitar, I freakin LOVE it!!

Yeah, they do a fixed bridge but it's a neck through with 2 EMGs, so it costs a lot more.
I wanted a single humbucker I could paint, that's why I went for this one, although I much prefer neck-thrus myself.

Re: NGD and refinish etc - Charvel DST-3 Star

You did a great job on the finish, looks good.....

I didn't really. Every coat of paint seemed to attract every pube or bit of oose in the room! And I only sanded the finish down to a glassy sheen on the front - the back and sides I never bothered touching with sandpaper at all.
I wanted it to look good, but seriously, this guitar was based on this.

That IS awesome! Good job .
I almost got me a old Dimarzio made by Charvel Star body, but was finacially challenged (broke).
One thing thouhg..that guitar needs a Green Humbucker!
BTW..that couch reminds me of the interior of a Jaguar XJ-12!

Oh, and one more thing. How in blue blazes werer you able to strip that thick white Poly finish ?

My sentiments !! AWEsome! Ive been itching to hear a review of these..

Im also VERY suprised that I like the yellow so much.

How is the neck? I figure if the neck feels even like my model 4, that would be great. I rather have the set neck , but dont like all the inlays and stuff.

Varg, Use a 90 degree cable.. will help with the leg jab.. Had to go that route with the Gus G I had.

Also, I LOVE your idea for the Truss covers! Family tribute.. Where you get them from??
I hope things are going better

looks like the pup was melted even.. This and willie nelson's Trigger about the most abused guits out there..

How did he get the wood chunks ripped out?? You gonna do that to yours ??

Re: NGD and refinish etc - Charvel DST-3 Star

I'll pass.

That thing looks like Big Bird when on a meth diet then got hit buy a bus whilst running from the cops.

Re: NGD and refinish etc - Charvel DST-3 Star

Well, I dunno. Maybe if it had all black hardware and one of them custom big bird yellow bobbins you can get from SD, I might change my mind. I've never been a fan of the "star" shaped Jackson/Charvels though.

I didn't. As per Dominus's instructions, I just sanded the original finish back a little bit and sprayed right over it. :approve:

I've not played a Charvel Model Series, so sorry man, I can't compare it. I like it, but I kinda get along with almost anything neck-wise. :cool2:

The first truss cover I got custom made by a guy from the Jackson forum, he has his own website www.fretsonthenet.com Great guy, he made various other parts for me for my Jacksons, and the prices are excellent too.
The last couple of truss covers I've just taken along to my local engraver and had them do it, as I had some spares.

Yeah, I'll use a 90 degree cable if I ever get a chance to gig with this, I just find it an annoying design flaw though - how hard can it be to rout it to the top horn? :28:

I believe he took circular saws to it and set it on fire and stuff. Just beat the crap out of it. That wood chunk isn't even there any more, there's NO wood at all at that part, it's a metal frame now

And no, I'm not doing anything like that - I think that guitar has some mojo, but I like my own guitars to look a bit neater.
