NGD...Black Stratocaster (left-handed)...

Just a few days ago I made a trip down to the local music shop to do a little browsing and I ran across this black beauty. I couldn't resist buying it and I got a good deal for it. Its a left-handed Squier Standard Stratocaster (2000) and I'm a right handed player. I've always wanted a Jimi Hendrix style of Strat and I finally got one.

I reversed the nut and scraped pencil lead into the string slots for lubrication and better tuning. I slapped on a new set of strings (Ernie Ball Sling light top heavy bottom). I set up the intonation, neck relief (truss rod), the action of the strings and pickup height adjustment for optimal tone. The guitar now plays pretty amazing...no issues whatsoever. It has fairly low string action without any string buzz anywhere on the fretboard.

I'm starting to get used to playing an upside down Strat. It's a bit of a challenge reaching the high frets but it can be done with a little practice. Here are some pics of the guitar. It's black but it has metal flakes in the paint job something like a Candy Apple Red Strat.

why didn't you just get a right handed tusq nut?
it seems the string break angle would be off
but I could be wrong

Oh, I fixed that problem with a steak knife, but eventually I will be putting a TUSQ nut on it some day. I got a couple hanging (or hiding) around somewhere. I also need a vibrato bar for the guitar and I can probably get that at my local music store. The guitar plays cleanly on all open strings. I had a little problem with the high E slot on the nut, but the steak knife fixed that. The guitar plays great all around.

I almost grabbed a lefty Squier last week, but someone snagged it before I got the chance. I mainly wanted it for the neck.

Do you find the controls to be in your way at all, being on top?

The controls don't seem to get in the way as much as people think. Once you get used to playing an upside down Strat you develop a certain style of playing and the controls don't seem to be much of a factor or hinderance. It's good to check the controls once in awhile to make sure they are on the right setting. The input jack can be a bit in the way depending on what guitar cord you use and the style of end like an elbow-shaped plug.

MIJ guitars are well sought after. That's a keeper guitar that you have! Mine was made in Indonesia in which they have a good reputation of building guitars equivalent to their American counterparts.

I always liked that look, but I think ergonomically, it might be a mess for me.

Yeah,I've got Squiers from all over the place, can get 'em cheap enough & they generally takes upgrades pretty well.
I'd been thru a few LH Strats & finally snagged one that was a cut above,to me anyway('86 Fender).
The control thing could be a PITA to some,I'm sure,esp if you're a knob & switch rider...:p

The lack of a tummy cut is my biggest "issue",but certainly not a deal-breaker.Someone here was building a Lefty a while back, albeit guts & cut were set up Right-handed.Was looking forward to seeing it finished, but I guess he had too much fun playing it & forgot to follow-up...

Anywho,Welcome to teh Lefty Strat club!

I find the tummy cut comes into effect when you play the guitar sitting down on you lap. You can play more at angle if you want depending if you wear a strap or not. I finally have the strap button moved to the other horn on the guitar. The guitar plays well standing up. All I need now is a vibrato bar which I can probably pick up at my local music store. I gotta do them Jimi dives.:headbang:

Re: NGD...Black Stratocaster (left-handed)...

Speaking as a true lefty:

Congratulations.

You have purchased the infamously iconic "Only Left-Handed Guitar In The Whole Damn Store & It's Always A Cheap Black Strat" guitar.

I'm sure they will quickly replace their loss with yet another cheap lefty black strat for the left-handers out there to peruse...

"Well, you can't go wrong with a Fender Strat."

Re: NGD...Black Stratocaster (left-handed)...

Congrats that is cool as hell. The reverse headstock takes a bit to get used to, but when it does, it makes better sense than the other way around.

You're right...the reverse headstock took some time to get used too but now I go by feel to find the right tuning key. You develop a technique after a while.
