NGD Blank Slate!

Just picked this beaut up last night.

Mockingbird Special X with no pickups. This is an interesting situation since I don't really know what the guitar sounds like yet. I'll be shooting from the hip here. So its suggestion time!

I play mostly modern rock and various forms of metal, but also jam on some blues and classic rock. Maybe some progressive-ish stuff.
I'll be playing through a Marshall DSL and Peavey 5150II.

I am putting a set of zebra burstbucker pros in for the time being, (they go in as soon as the pickup rings I ordered get here) but I will definitely want something else. I am thinking about a Custom (5?) bridge and 59 neck to start off, but would really love to use this guitar as a "tester" for new pickups. I'm curious about Dimarzios and other brands, but don't know too much about them so feel free to throw those suggestions my way too. Can't wait to hear 'em!

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

A Duncan Custom at the bridge is definitely a good bet. I wonder how a Distortion neck model would sound at the neck considering the Special X has a mohogany back.

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

I did and it wasn't as loud as I thought it would be being a neck through. Or maybe that's typical, not sure since it's my first of the NT construction. It seems to be pretty well balanced tonally though. Can't wait to put something in it to find out.

I love the distortion neck in my Les Paul, but I've been wanting to try the 59 for a while now. I'm sure it'll make it in there at some point though.

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

thats sweet man. id rock that **** anyday. if it was me id run a tb6 and sh2b neck

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

Thats sharp! Yeah, if ya want bada$$ crankery, go with a Distortion bridge/JB neck. If you want more versatility, go with a custom/59b in the neck. I run alot of 59b models in the neck as the bridge model gives alil more of a "smokey" blues tone. Then, change the magnet in the Custom to an alnico 8 and have the tone of angels. ; )

Looks like I'm gonna need some practice swapping magnets. There's no better time to learn than now I supppose.

What floor models would you guys try? I haven't seen any other brands yet either. I'm putting the Burstbuckers in tonight btw. I'll see if I can't get some sound clips for ya.

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

Used to have one of these and the cheaper bolt on copy too, I the X I had an Invader bridge with a stag mag neck, the cheaper bolt on had a xl500 bridge with a Jazz neck....

The Custom/59b would be a good choice, the 59n would be a little too weak and bland IMO with those woods. Something about that guitar just screams that it wants some medium output ceramic mags though, which is why I said the custom/DDn combo would work well. I think that I just like ceramic mags in mahogany. That being said, I do have a Dimebucker/Alnico II Pro combo in one of my guitars. The AII sounds amazingly thick in that guitar and acts as a nice contrast to the Dimebucker. The middle switch position is so fat and warm and cutting and thick and awesome.

Mockingbird Special X with no pickups.

This pretty instrument sounds quite "LesPaul-ish".

I'd go for maximum versatility, so my advice would be an A4 '59n in the neck, with an A8 '59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge.

IME, with this combo you'll be able to convincingly play just about any style of music, even the heaviest.

HTH,

If the bridge and tailpiece are a standard size, the gotoh upgrade will give you a little more output/ harmonics, and its not as expensive ad tone pros.

Re: NGD Blank Slate!

I'd throw a Custom Custom in the bridge and maybe a '59?Custom Hybrid in the neck. Or the Black Winter set could be a winner in that guitar.
