just got my new Carvin X100B and it is an amazing amp. awesome clean channel very fenderish but a little fuller. as far as the drive channel it has more of a marshall vibe kind of like a JCM800. the drive channel has a hi gain mod which brings out more harmonics sustain and of course increases the gain. don't get me wrong it want do slipknot or death metal but it was never designed for that anyway. its more of an 80's metal amp. it has an assignable 5 band EQ, but the 5 band EQ is used to fine tune the amps bass mid and treble. in other words its not like the mark V where you select the amps EQ or the 5 band, but on this amp they work together. I really like the ease of use its as simple as plug in and play and it sounds great, but if you want to you can really shape your sound by using the EQ. the am has 3 different power settings 25 / 50 / 100 and unlike a lot of other amps it uses all 4 power tubes no matter what power setting you use. as far as I can tell when you select 25 or 50 it just seems to push the tubes hard to give you more of that pushed tube amp sound at lower volumes. the amp also has a selector switch to switch from el34 or 6l6 / 5881 tubes. if you dig hair metal you gotta try one of these bad boys out, trust me you want be disappointed.

yes the tone controls are active so a little turn of the knob can really change the tone. the 5 band EQ is also active. the 5 band EQ is freaking awesome it allows you to set you clean like you want and then the 5 band EQ lets you take out bass or boost it along with the mid and treble for the gain channel so you can dial in 2 distinct tones. or you can select to just use the 3 basic tone knobs on the gain channel and use the 5 band EQ for the clean. I really like the clean its like fenders clean but has more bass to really round out the highs for a very full sound.
I always was afraid the gain wouldn't be enough for some of the things I wanted to do, but I set it to high gain mod dimed the gain on 25 watt mode and I played master of puppets and after tweaking the sliders I got really close to James' tone. so maxed out you can do Metallica. then you can dial the gain back and it sounds good pulling off a smokey old school blues tone. it's really a fantastic amp. I got the head, footswitch and head cover for 720.00 with shipping.
