NGD: Charvel Guthrie Govan

This cost me a Stratocaster on trade and cash but I couldnt resist because it was available at a pretty nice price.

Here is a quick description/review:

The body is baked Basswood with a maple top, the neck is baked maple with graphite reinforcements and maple and ebony fret markers. It has giant stainless steel frets that feel great and make grabbing the strings really easy. The pickups are clear, moderately hot and unforgiving, not for people who cant play cleanly. The real plus is that the guitar is incredibly resonant acoustically which is likely the result of the practically not there satin finish.

I cant think of anything negative to say about this guitar other than the basswood is soft and the top shows wear really easily.

I forgot to mention the bridge. It is a take on the original non locking Floyd Rose design that is designed for this guitar in particular. It feels great, has a huge brass block and a Tremol-no device. Combined with the bone nut and locking tuners the guitar stays in tune incredibly well.

Damn. Would love to know the story because these beauts usually cost an arm and a leg

Daammmn...!!! That's more than 3000 dollars for the whole damn thing. Amazing.. What the f*ck happened to the back? Is it the way it is from the factory?

Re: NGD: Charvel Guthrie Govan

What I really love about this guitar is the non-fine tuners bridge. I don't think it's designed for this guitar exclusively. I saw a video of Yngwie in 1985 playing a red Strat with that type of Floyd.

This is a bridge that Charvel made exclusively for this model. They tried the Floyd equivalent but it needed mods to match the neck radius properly and the stability of the Gotoh that he used on the Suhr wasn't working for Guthrie anymore. The guys at the custom shop decided that making a version of the Floyd was the way to go.

This bridge is only available on the GG model.

I know someone who knows someone who fancied a custom shop Strat I had. A little discussion a couple phone calls and before long a deal was cut.

The bridge looks like the original Floyd (before the addition of the fine tuners) that EVH used in the VHII Bumblebee guitar. It's odd that Charvel made a copy themselves instead of getting Floyd to reproduce them. You'd think it would be cheaper to get a company with the machinery to make it rather than do it in house.

WOW!! What a beast you have there. I remember Guthrie Govan's Rig Rundown where he extensively explained all the details on that guitar.
Tall frets, pickup switching, the story behind the custom pickups and even behind the tone pot's behavior for a "woman" tone.

Congratulations man!
