NGD - DBZ Royale (pre 2012 model)

Managed to find one with the old eagle headstock and Dean's stop tail after going through a few eBay searches and it finally arrived 2 days ago.

Stock pickups are supposed to be joint developed by Dean and Seymour Duncan. They sound good after some height adjustment. Flamed maple body is thin and workmanship is very good. Neck is rather heavy (heavier than the body it seems, possibly due to the metal eagle logo on the headstock) but fretwork is excellent and sharp edges on the fret ends were carefully removed.

Completed setting it up and lowered the string actions yesterday but am still trying to get used to the v-neck and thin body though......

with a body that thin, it's "bound" to be lighter than the neck. pun intonated. looks killer.

Re: NGD - DBZ Royale (pre 2012 model)

wow now that's thin.
can you even fit a push-pull pot in there??

If you can get one in a sabre you can get one in that haha, Actually you can only fit a push pull in one position on a sabre the other wont fit.

Super nice guitar btw...love the blue.

I'm planning on adding a Bill Lawrence(Wilde) Q-Filter onto the tone pot this weekend using a push-pull pot, will know if it can fit by then....the cavity for electronics is rather compact.
One thing I noticed is that the pickup cavity might not be deep enough. I saw the neck pickup pushing the pickup ring away from the body while I'm trying to lower the pickup to flush it with the ring......

That's a slick looking guitar. Did they come in red?

I saw an offering (same pre-2012 model) in plain trans-red. However if you look at the latest models offered after Dean Zelinsky left the company in 2012 (these came with different headstock design), they do have some sick quilted maple tops

Re: NGD - DBZ Royale (pre 2012 model)

LOL! Dean left the co? Whats up with him? He starts a co and leaves... Anyhow, gorgeous top on that! Visually , I dont care for the thin body, but it prolly feels good on my back, esp compared to my 11lb Burny. Ive been looking at one of themodels from Deans new co. looks like a soltero(LP)

Re: NGD - DBZ Royale (pre 2012 model)

I knew these were thin, but I didn't realize just how thin.

So is that body only maple or does it have a sliver of mahogany backing there as well?

The body is mahogany with the maple cap. Neck is mahogany as well.

To SirJackdeFuzz, they changed the headstock design after Dean left the co and the co was renamed to DBZ-Diamond.
From what I read, the old headstock includes the metal eagle "shield" for aesthetic and to increase the weight of the neck (and therefore, sustain - similar idea as to why Yngwie chose the CBS headstock for his Strat). However, this made the guitar really neck-heavy. The new DBZ-Diamond heastock might be better in this case although I haven't tried it yet.

Black Imperial with gold hardware => BB's "Lucille" on steroids.....lol
