NGD - Epi SG

There's not a whole lot that'll get me to leave my comfy couch on Sunday while football is on, but a new guitar is one of those things that will.

A guy had it on Craig's list for $125, got it for $100. Action is pretty high, but I'll mess with it this evening.

Not sure of the year, but I don't believe it's the Pro, as it's not coil tapped.

Any clue as to what pups would be in it? I plugged into the guy's Bugera half stack, and it sounded pretty darn good. Had that SG snarly bite.

Cheap ones were stock in 2008. Epi didn't start their PU upgrade program until 2010, and even then they're using Alnico Classic Pros in SG's now, and not Probuckers. One in a while someone upgrades the PU's in the Epi they're selling and you don't know it until you get it home. I've got a few Epi G400's, and have swapped out the PU's in all of them, which made a big improvement in all of them.

What's your favorite pickup combo for a G400?

What's your favorite pickup combo for a G400?

- 498T/490R with an UOA5 or A8 in the bridge, and an A5 in the neck - an improvement on the stock Gibson version
- '59B (UOA5), and '59N - vintage sound
- C8 and '59N - warm, meaty bridge
- Rio Grande BBQ set - warm and muscular

Thanks blueman!
I may have to get my hands wet on mag swaps. The 498/490 sounds like it might a winner.

With the stock mags, the EQ's of the 498T/490R set are polar opposites: bright, thin bridge paired with a warm, fat neck. How do you set the amp's EQ to make both PU's sound good? That's why a lot of them get pulled and sold. But an A5 does wonders for the neck, and a warmer magnet in the bridge fills in the mids and shaves off the excess treble. Then it's a well-balanced set.

Fwiw, I have a Gibson SGJ that has 490R/490T stock. Problem solved.
