I just posted this in the Pickup Lounge because of my experience with the Gibson P-90s. But it has a few things to say about the guitars, so I'm also posting it here for those that may not read the "Lounge".
Just recently got a Gibson DC Les Paul Goldtop with P-90s. Neck sounded great but the bridge was very thin and weak sounding. I put in an A8 and what a difference. It has more body now, but still has the P-90 bite that I love so much.
I've got a couple Mean 90s which I think are terrific! This Gibson P-90 with the A8 now sounds more like those.
I've also got a couple P-Rails and the P-90 in those is massive. I really love those as well.
Man.....I love P-90 pups.
Certainly they don't do everything I want them to do, but that's why I have the Pearly, Demon, and '59A8 (and a miriad others).
I have always (at least for 40 years) wanted a Goldtop LP with P-90s. Now she's finally mine. And I'm lovin her.
Funny thing I've noticed about Gibson guitars.......
I had three Gibsons in the late 50s and 60s (335, 345, & LP Custom); 8 Gibsons in 2004-2011 (6 LPs, 2 Firebirds); and 7 Epis (a '68 Sheraton, 2 LPs, 2 SGs, & 2 Wilshires).
The early Gibbys had excellent build and finish quality. WAY better than any of the newer Gibs. And ALL of the Epis have quality equal to the early Gibbys. Yes, I know that the components in the Epis are not equal to the Gibs, but that is easily correctable.
And generally speaking, I hear that the wood in an Epi is not as "good" as in a Gibson, but the wood in my specific Epis is easily on par with Gibson and they have as good if not better tone (after replacing all the guts and pups, of course). My Epi LP Classic weighs a ton, and has better tone and sustain than any of my Gibs (better than any of my other guitars. But the thing is so dang heavy, my back can't take playing it for very long at a time).
Maybe I've just had good luck with my Epis, or bad luck with my recent Gibsons, but comparing these 18 guitars, that "coincidence" is hitting 100% and pretty hard to ignore.
Sorry for that rant about Gib quality vs Epi.
I DO love my new Gibson, however.
