Re: NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

From PRS to Gibson to Fender to Gretsch --- next thread Phil starts is going to be "I'm going all acoustic" :biglaugh:

I just want to reiterate how much I want a Jet. F-it, may as well throw up some eye candy whilst I'm at it

Very, very cool.

I got a Duo Jet earlier in the year, and I'm in love with it. Comparing it to a Strat or a Les Paul is pointless. A Gretsch sounds like no other guitar, and no other guitar can sound like a Gretsch. Even the stock FilterTrons have a lot of power and midrange bark ... I can't imagine how massive the PowerTrons are.

Ok. Now I'm envious twice in one thread! I must have one Gretsch eventually. Congratulations to you both.

On the models I have heard (not played) single notes sing like a humbucker under gain while chords remain bright and articulate. Like you said, Matt, they are incomparable.

I've actually got an acoustic project in the works! Ever since I got that Gibby J-45, I've been playing acoustic a lot.

I still play the LP, Strat, and now the Gretsch is going into the rotation. Recording an album in New Brunswick at the end of the month, so it's all different tones. Same thing for live; different tones for different tunes.

Cheers! :)

Btw, Drew, that red one is the stock picture for mine... thanks for including it in the eye candy group... ;)

Beautiful guitar! Gretsches have a tone you can't find anywhere else. Enjoy it in good health :)

Thanks man! I have a gig tonight, so I'll be trying it out in proper fashion. Bar here in downtown Ottawa, we are headlining after 2 opening acts of acoustic celtic flavored music. Gonna play it old school for this one; Gretsch into a Limited edition Fender Blues Jr, with a Jensen speaker, running loud but clean with just a hint of breakup when I hit it hard; with a Vox Saturator for those really nasty songs, and a EHX LPB-1 for solos and such. Think I'm gonna mic up with a SM57, pure to the board. Gonna keep it all in the hands tonight, and mess around with my master volume and my tone switch a bunch.

I'll let you know how it goes.

After gig conclusion about this guitar : It should actually be called the "orgasmotron", caus that thing ripped through the entire evening like it was nobody's business! Holy ****! Loving this guitar right now!

Ok, sober, non idiotic report of yesterday's gig with the guitar.

Guitar performed great. The sequence was Blues Jr. - LPB1 - Satchurator - Gretsch.

Tone I got was very warm, very vintage. It almost reminded me of playing a semi hollow (very close to a ES339), but with a more controlled and tight low end, and with a more punchy and focused mid section.

Under heavy distortion, the pickups can be a little bit shrill and harsh, but that tone switch flicked half way fixed that instantly. Speaking of controls, I just rolled off the bridge just a tad on it's independent control, and just rocked the 2 switches and master volume online. A breeze to use.

The guitar stayed in tune like a champ. Less retuning to do, even with the use of the Bigsby, than my Strat, which has the trem blocked. Maybe my strat needs a setup.

Overall, very happy with it all. No feedback, no unusable tones, just good fun. If you want a guitar that gives you vintage tones, somewhere between a telecaster, with the airiness of a semi hollow and a little more balls while adding definition, not a bad guitar. Not advised for anything super heavy or super modern, but if I had to tell you that, what's the point of writing this, lol.
