NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

Hey forum brothers,

Haven't been on much lately, but updated last week in the sound room. I forgot to mention that I had an incoming NGD, but waited for the details to be settled and the pictures to be taken before posting anything.

Gentlemen, this is my latest acquisition; a Grestch Power Jet Firebird. It's pretty much your standard Jet body; heavily chambered mahogany, with a maple cap, set mahogany neck and ebony fretboard. Where she begins to differ from other Jets is in the details. Firstly, the bridge is pinned, so it's not going anywhere. I got mine used, so I think the only after market part is a Gretsch licensed replacement roller bridge instead of the TOM piece. Other than that, you are looking at Powertron pickups, that give it a little more juice. There's also locking tuners on the puppy. The bigsby was set up by my favorite shop, and in harmony with the lockers, she stays in tune like a champ.

Interesting overall tone. It's got some of the features of a LP, in the sense that the bottom end of mahogany is there, but it's very airy and loose, but with some detail due to the very crisp lower mids. The top end is glassy and clear, showing off the chambered body. Lots of note definition is pretty much the best way to put it. I've been playing my LP and my Strat exclusively for gigs, and this seems to be an interesting middle ground sonically between the two. I'll take her to the gig on saturday, where she'll see two hours of stage and a bunch of different kinds of music, and I'll report then.

And now, I give you pictures.

You are a god among men. I want one of those so bad.

Congrats!

how do the pickups sound, vs, say, a typical gibson tone?

Re: NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

Hmm my first post disappeared.

That is a killer looking guitar, hope it plays just as good as it looks.

Thanks dude! They are fun, very fun.

It's actually closer to a strat tonally than a LP, strangely enough. You get a separation between notes and a clarity that's not very typical in Gibsons. Where a Gibby would be more focused, dark and creamy, this would be airy, open and brighter.

It does. I am really digging the ebony fingerboard right now... very fast feeling.

this

I'd take one with dynasonics, as well

Yeah the dyna's would mellow it out, and probably give it a little more twang. Being a rock player, I can't complain about these though.

Classy classy classy.

This. Oh goddamn, this. It's crazy how with all that's available, these days, Gretsch kind of falls by the wayside. I AT LEAST have to try a set of Gretsch pups in one of my Vs.

Re: NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

Very, very cool.

I got a Duo Jet earlier in the year, and I'm in love with it. Comparing it to a Strat or a Les Paul is pointless. A Gretsch sounds like no other guitar, and no other guitar can sound like a Gretsch. Even the stock FilterTrons have a lot of power and midrange bark ... I can't imagine how massive the PowerTrons are.

Brighter, clearer, almost with a hint of Tele/Broadcaster twang. Ideal for players who like to dig in.

Re: NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

ohhhhh sounds like my kinda guitar! I may have to take one through it's paces!

Re: NGD - Gretsch content - Just checking in real quick ;)

Cool, I have a double cut jet that I put the same pups in. I think they are a big improvement over the stock Gretsch Filtertrons and worth the upgrade.

These are slightly higher power versions of the TV jones classica so they take drive better with less squeal and have more lower end. They stillo allow you to do country and rockabilly but I think they give you some more rock tones.

I almost didn't notice this was an RD post because of the Display Picture change, but it makes sense now, lol.

After only a few hours with it, I gotta agree that a comparison is useless; I was rather trying to describe some features of the sound. It really is it's own thing though. That midrange bark makes for some definition, but retains some really nasty features when distorted, that make it sound really vintage, in a modern alt kind of way, if that makes sense at all. Let's just say it makes perfect sense that Jack White's been on a Gretsch binge after playing this one.

And yes: PowerTrons > The concept of god.

My spider sense is tingling.

You're not the only one.:scratchch

Seriously dudes, the only thing I can think of right now is "Why the **** haven't I played one of these before?"

After rehearsing with it, I'm really, really digging the switching, which was a concern for me. One you set your volumes, all you have to worry about is 2x 3way switches. First is pickups, like on a standard Les Paul. Second is tone. In the middle, it's bypassed, and your pickups just spit it out. Hit the switch up, and it rolls the tone all the way down, for a really wooly and smooth high frequency cut. Hit the switch down, and you get this tone half-rolled off effect, but almost with a bit of an upper mid kick, that just cuts like hell for solos.

For reference, I played through a Vox AC4TV, with the 10 inch celestion, mic'ed into a PA, just on the cusp of tube distortion, with a Vox Saturator distortion to really rip. Really, really good tones out of that little setup with this guitar.

I really like the tone switch as well. I describe it like this:

Up: jazzy
Down: Stratty
Middle: RRRRRAWWWWRRRR!!!
