NGD! Ibanez Premium

I traded my PRS SE Mike Mushok baritone for it. The SE was a brilliant guitar, but I just didn't feel inspired by the low tuning. So I figured, why not go for something better suited for my usual Drop C? I got offered this, and I figure what the hell!

So far, I like it! It's a lot more plain-looking than the baritone, but that's not a bad thing. I thought the stock tuning machines were going to be crap (as they tend to be when they're self-branded) because they resemble the stock tuners on my PRS SE's, but they're actually pretty solid. No issues here. The tone is good too! Nice sustain, although brighter and snappier than my PRS SE Singlecut and LTD Eclipse, but that's to be expected. It's good for some variety. I actually think it's a little bit better than my MIJ RG570 in that department. The neck profile feels right at home (I used to have an RGA Prestige, and the neck profile on this Premium is remarkably similar, albeit, the fingerboard edges are a bit sharper, not as rounded off, but that's no biggie). The wood on the fretboard has a very nice grain to it, and the neck is supposedly titanium-reinforced? Or at least I remember reading that. Love the bridge too. Super stable and heavy-duty.

The fretwork... hmmm... the frets ends are a sight to behold. Very smooth and rounded off! The frets need some leveling, though. I set it up with low action, at the same height I set my PRS SE and LTD EC, and this Premium has a couple of dead spots. I guess I'm going to take it to my tech to have that sorted.

The pickups... hmmm... decent, actually! The bridge measures 16.8K and the neck 10.2K. They're not quite Duncans, though. The Black Winters and Distortions in my other guitars obliterate them. I'm undecided about dropping a Dimebucker/'59B set on it or some Seymour Duncan IBZ's (Distortion/'59N). I'm leaning towards the IBZ's, but that would mean I'd have to rip them off another guitar, and that other guitar would have to get the Dimebucker/'59, lol.

All in all, decent trade! The PRS SE baritone was brilliant, but I feel much more inspired playing this.

:)

I don’t think I’ve seen that type of bridge before, what does it do?

Looks like it’s in good nick though.

Re: NGD! Ibanez Premium

Sweet guitar. Those pickups are the IBZ's made my DiMarzio, probably in the vein of the Tone Zone / Air Norton. From what I could find, the fret ends are rounded off at the factory. You got a good trade, IMO.

Here's info on that bridge:

Tight-End R Bridge
The Tight-End R Bridge was designed specifically for the RG flat top. A marked improvement over the conventional fixed bridge, the Tight-End R delivers both playability and rock-solid stability. Saddles firmly locked onto the base plate maximize string vibration transmitted to the body. The smooth bridge surface protects the strumming hand no matter how aggressively you play. Simple saddle height and intonation adjustments ensure accurate set-up.

Sweet guitar.
Thank you!

I don't think so, man. These are CAP-something pickups. It was the RG921 that had the DiMarzio IBZ's. This is the RG821. The DiMarzio IBZ's say "DiMarzio" on them. These are just generic pickups. They haven't got the triangular DiMarzio tabs. They're alright for what they are, but they're definitely not DiMarzios. I wouldn't change them if they were DiMarzio IBZ's, TBH.

The DIBZ's look like this:

Notice they even route the cavities for the characteristic triagular tabs DiMarzios have.

Yeah, the frets got the "Premium treatment", which I guess means the edges are rounded off (like a Prestige), but the rest of the fretwork is so so. Then again, this guitar is not new, so I'm not sure it's the factory's fault. The frets seem to be in extremely good shape, though, so my guess is yeah... slightly shoddy fretwork. Nothing that can't fe fixed, though.

Ahh, gotcha. Yeah, the info I found was for the RG921. Still, great guitar. After a propper fret dressing, that thing should play like butter.

Very cool. I’m back in love with Ibanez after getting that TAM10 8 string. Very playable.

Re: NGD! Ibanez Premium

Thank you! Ibanez necks are my favorite. My dream guitar would be a Les Paul with a Wizard neck, lol.

Re: NGD! Ibanez Premium

Meh. Get a Schecter and you'll realize how Ibanezes in general are overpriced toys. The Schecter Banshee especially will obliterate even MIJ Prestiges.

Thank you, dudes!

I don't agree... but I don't disagree either, lol. A couple of months ago, I actually traded an Ibanez Prestige for a MIK LTD (made in the same factory as Schecters), and I don't regret it one bit.

That being said, though, I was missing the Wizard Prestige neck on that old Prestige. This settles my GAS for now. There's something about those Wizard necks that just fits my hand well. I've tried some Jackson and LTD thin/flat necks which are nice, but they're never quite as nice. That being said, though, I haven't tried any of the thin/flat necks some Schecters have.

Re: NGD! Ibanez Premium

Those pups aren't bad at all. Swapped mine for Evos, played it for 2 years like that, swapped back to the IBZ...and preferred them :D

Re: NGD! Ibanez Premium

The Schecter Banshee's neck feels like Prestige with less strain. I suggest you check it out: https://www.schecterguitars.com/vault/banshee-6-passive-2013-12-19-detail
C-shaped, 19mm thick and 42mm wide at the nut? The specs don't seem very Wizard-ish at all. Not to say they're better or worse, but that doesn't seem like it'd be a direct substitute for a Wizard neck.

Then again, I do recognize those Korean Schecters are VERY well put together, and would probably not need the fret dressing this Ibanez does.
